Off Topic Boot light installation guide

Ah well, I went to the dealer and ordered one. That was the correct part number for a boot light he tells me, although the invoice said ceiling lamp. However, I`m sure in one of the guides it said they were the same thing.

Not due before Thursday ...

It does list under ceiling light, so don't worry about that.

Shame you had to pay dealer price (I think when I asked the dealer it was over £20) as they do come up on ebay from time to time. And they are a fairly common fitting across Fiats and Alfas which helps up availability. Anyway its an easy fit and well worth doing.

Yes, it was a few pence under £20. I was hoping to get one from a scrappy but no joy quoting that number, nor on Ebay.

Still, I`m taking the plunge as the clocks have gone back, leading to dark nights. It`s a pain trying to see in the dark.

Not sure why they`re not fitted as standard if all the wiring and fittings are there and it`s a retail £20 item

Specially as mine was the top of the (then) range of Mylife`s :(

Stll, it`s a very good guide on FF so hoping I`ll be able to fit it in under 30minutes (y)

Before I fitted the genuine Fiat part in my 500 I had a battery powered light which I got from B&Q. It was round with Velcro on the back so it stuck easily to the carpet on the boot side, the only problem was finding it in the dark to turn it on! Still it was only a couple of quid.

If you can fit a micro swtich near where the boot catch is
Remove the old switch and wire it to new switch near the boot latch instead
So it goes on and off with the boot :)

This is what I used before I got the official part.

Yay!

Part arrived and fitted in less than 15 minutes (forgot to pull the black clip through the hole in the carpet!) and it works like a charm

Only slight problem is that there didn`t appear to be any where to fit the lamp. There is a similar size & shaped hole at the top of the shelf support bracket, but there wasn`t enough cable to fit it in and connect. Furthermore, it would have been facing straight backwards towards the open boot, rather than in to the boot space.

Fixed it in position with some double sided hook & loop fasteners. Looks good but is easy to pull away when the bulb needs replacing :D

Great guide, thanks to the OP and FF :slayer:

That hole above the lamp is where it should fit I think, it looks a similar shape to the one on my 500. I'd take a photo but don't think it would come out in the dark. Is the cable still fastened to the rest of the loom with masking tape, like mine was, as that may be why it doesn't seem long enough.

The lamp does seem to fit in that hole yes, but as you say, the cable is still fastened to the rest of the loom and doesn`t seem long enough for it to fit up there.

That horizontal hole is the right one. On later Pandas the plastic bootside moulding was changed and the light slot was moved. Your one is the same as mine.

From your picture it looks like there would be enough cable to reach the light fitting. The fitting does go into the hole with its front facing the rear of the car (the whole fitting lights up so there is light thrown forward too), and with the connector on the left hand side, as you look at it.

You will need to disconnect the wiring from the light fitting - as you have to fit the light into the hole and then connect the wires from behind. If you just try to fit the light with the wires looping around outside the plastic bootside moulding, then you won't have enough length. Also take care when disconnecting the wiring from the light - you need to depress the lugs on the connector before you can pull it out (its fiddly!). If you just **** it off then you will shear off the lugs and then the connector could vibrate/work loose in the future.

It'll be worth it in the end!:p
