Starter motor failure - again

Last summer the starter motor on my Multijet was intermittent. It would always start, but there was the occasional whirring without engagement. To avoid complete failure, I bought a new starter on 06/08/12 and it was fitted 2 days later (too awkward to do at home without ramps). 13 months later, it has failed.

Horrendous noise when you turn the key. It was a brand new RTX starter and the suppliers have just shrugged their shoulders and said "12 months warranty, mate." Do I have grounds to complain that it is defective? Car has done 13k in that time and been started about 8 times a day, weekdays only.

I have since found out that RTX starters don't have a good reputation amongst the online fraternity so I would avoid them if I were you. I bought it for £67, they are now almost £100. Bosch / Lucas ones are £125+. I see why now, quality. I've bought a used Lucas one from a breakers for £40 with a 6 month guarantee, being swapped over on Tuesday.

The replacement one was wrong. There was nowhere for the solenoid trigger wire to connect. (I have photos but inserting them as massive images is frustrating me. Its awkward to insert them into the post). All the cross reference guides said it would be OK, but they're wrong.

Despite being assured it would fit my car, I had to have a new one at £88 + VAT, plus the labour since it was on the garage's ramps with no starter fitted. (n)

Be warned that apparently, 'early' cars (2005?!) have different wiring to later ones.
