Panda 4x4 Prop shaft Centre Support

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the centre support without having to buy a new prop shaft. I have a company telling me I will have to buy the a complete prop shaft assembly including the support as you cannot split the prop shaft and just change the bearing. Doesn't sound right to me as on the Italian ebay website, they are selling just the centre support. Anyone with experience and advice? Much appreciated. Martin

Re: Panda 4x4 Prop shaft Centre Support

Whilst Fiat only supply the complete shaft, it is of a common design and will probably use standard universal joints. This means it will be reconditionable and there are many companies offering this service. Stick it into Google and see what comes up. Then phone and discuss.

To replace the centre bearing will involve splitting at the centre universal joint, so this is probably best replaced at the same time. A good company will recommend doing all three and balancing it afterwards.

Here are a couple:
http://www.baileymorris.co.uk/index.asp
http://www.parkinsons.co.uk/

As you've found, the centre bearing is available, so it must be possible to replace it.
Here's one:
http://www.euro4x4parts.com/parts/tp...r_bearing.html

Make sure when talking to anyone, or ordering parts that they understand it is the "new" Panda 169, not the classic Panda 141.

When sorted, post the answer on here.

Re: Panda 4x4 Prop shaft Centre Support

Thanks Bill. I think I will go for a totally refurbished prop shaft that includes the centre support. I suspect the universal joints have taken a bit of a hammering with the prop shaft moving so much due to the failed centre support.

Re: Panda 4x4 Prop shaft Centre Support

I have the same issue - the rubber support to the centre bearing has failed and I need to replace. Apparently the propshaft can be separated into two parts -- it 'clicks' together near the centre bearing and universal joint. This is from a different vehicle but shows the process, which I believe to be similar: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1203765

I found a company near me in Luton who can recondition propshafts, but, oddly, have no facility to remove from or replace onto the vehicle so I will need to remove the shaft and get it to them (http://www.reco-prop.co.uk/).

Before removing from the vehicle, mark the flanges on shaft, gearbox and rear diff, so that you refit it in the same place. Theoretically this shouldn't make a difference, but it has been known to cause issues if replaced differently.

If you take the shaft apart, again, mark everything and put it back as it was originally aligned. The professional will do this anyway.

'uv' is not a term I associate with a car. Usually means ultra-violet, so not the right meaning here.
What exactly are you looking for?
If it is the viscous coupling, do a search, there was a recent thread where someone found a company to refurbish them.

Re: Panda 4x4 Prop shaft Centre Support

Itís short for universal joint , or spider joint if you prefer. Itís not a viscous coupling any way .

Someone must supply them , so Iím looking for that.

The above should show a viscous coupling , so definitely not that.

Re: Panda 4x4 Prop shaft Centre Support

Must be something lost in the translation from scottish to english then. I've always known it as a 'uj' for universal joint. Not sure how you get a v for joint.

Whatever, confusion sorted.
As I think the prop was made by GKN, I'd expect the uj to be a standard size. There always used to be just two sizes, but that was a long time ago. There may well be metric ones too now.
From my initial post, #2 , the link to Bailey Morris needs the 'index' suffix removing, thenit works. http://www.baileymorris.co.uk/
The other link, to Parkinsons, seems to have gone.
Others may be available, do a Google for propshaft services. Quite likely one in your area.

Have you looked closely at the uj? Is it held in with circlips as expected? If so, measure it carefully. Width across spider, diameter of end cups, and compare with anything found on Google. I'd be surprised if it was unique.

Also have a browse of thsi: https://www.fiatforum.com/panda/4561...panda-4x4.html

Re: Panda 4x4 Prop shaft Centre Support

I have a 2005 climbing, MOT said slight play in center bearing of prop shaft. I've been looking into a repair but have not done anything yet. It seems quite easy to replace the bearing only, these cost about £30 in the bracket. The UJ's are probably worn, these don't have circlips so will not be simple to replace but possible. It may work out cheaper to buy a complete refurbished shaft . At least you can still use the car with the shaft off. There must be lots of similar shafts, I've got one from a small 4x4 Japanese car ,but its shot as well.

Re: Panda 4x4 Prop shaft Centre Support

My apologies, I knew what I was saying I just got the initials wrong , anyway the UJ has no circlips but they may be equalised by my press as one of the cups have moved , giving it play, not ideal . The problem being Iím waiting for rear diff central bush and has not helped the balance . Thanks for links , Iíll have a look , we have someone local to look up . I have done many of these Agri UJís , but always been good to get replacement part . . There is too many companies trying to flog more than the part thatís wrong , but there are other ways of doing this . Cheers Pat
