Technical Clock resetting when ignition switched on!

I had my starter motor replaced.

Now when I turn the engine on the clock goes back to zero. Also I count miles every time i fill the tank. That also goes to zero.

Has the grage done something or like suggested here I need a new battery? At £80-£100 want to be sure I do need one. thanks

Last year about 15000 miles ago I fitted a £50 battery from Halfords. The same one was £35 on eBay but I could not do without the car. It starts the car just fine and the volts never drop too low. It might need replacement a bit sooner than the "correct" £100 battery but I doubt it. Age is often as much a battery killer as it's usage.

I fitted a LiFePO4 on the bike (BMW 1200 boxer twin) It's only 4AH but replaced a 14AH lead acid. It worked just fine and never gave trouble. LFPs can use 95% of their charge while Lead Acid starter batts only deliver 30% with any useful power so 4AH replaced 14AH. I tried it on the car (had to make terminal adaptors) and it worked perfectly. The voltage held up with engine on tickover, lights and all heaters running and moving the steering.

I'm not suggesting you rush out to fit a tiny battery, but it did prove that big fat starter batteries are overkill.

I had a Punto that had the same symptoms as yours. Every time I got in the car the trip computer / clock had reset, it was also a bit problematic to start, it would start but not keep running unless I feathered the throttle for 30 seconds or so, this happened for about 2 months and then the battery just died. A new battery cured the crap starting and the trip computer / clock resetting every time.
