THis is an old post - but worth re-starting.

My wife runs a 3 year old Panda 1 litre. About a year ago, the engine would die then re-start intermittently - didn't seem to be any pattern to it. It could be when changing down on approach to a junction, driving at a steady bspeed - anytime with no prior indiocation, but would either re-start immediately or woudl bump start (if going slowly enough). Tried something I found on another forum - to re-learn the throttle. This worked ofr a time, but in the last few weeks it has been getting worse. It has happened from every speed from 10MPH to 70 - sometimes when going obver heavy bumps -sometime not.

I have had it checked out by a garage I trust - sometime ago - it stalled during the test! - but they found nothing.

I looked at some posts and spotted some with a P0352 error - also refers to the Crankshaft position sensor. Has this been diagnosed as the likely cause - I have a diagnostic kit - but have yet to find out where to plug it in - cvan anyone help me with that?:)

Just found you! I found 'end of teather' post earlier. Luckily I copied my contribution - https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/305258-end-my-tether-car-3.html?p=3146730
I have an (Oct) 09 Panda 1.1 and posted before about cutting out at random in potentially dangerous situations. At very near the end of warranty after much searching by dealer I just left it with them to find it as the warranty expired. They eventually fixed it. Now 2 month is on same problem. Went back, they said (let it slip) that it was Main Fuse Box Earthing problem, but will want money to sort it in new year. It is going to Wales tomorrow. If it kills my partner who is responsible? Haynes manual is useless (although managed to help me replace door lock cylinder a few weeks ago). I need lots of light, warmth and no rain to tackle problem and save money.

The engine is the 1.1 Eco - car was bought new in 2009. Battery terminals checked by garage - but when wetaher better will re-check them.

Will look at Main fuse earthing - but another thread mentioned the Crankshaft Postion sensor being loose as well as mentioning Ignition Coil B - both of which I will have checked out.

Thanks Mike and Mots Easterly Pandas for your replies. Mike am checking out your thread after this reply.

Jim:)

Ok - an update. I took the car along with several bits I'd gleaned from this Forum along to a garagea I trust to check things out thoroughly and not to change things just on the off chance that it might solve the problem. Sure enough the car exhibitte the same symptoms for them on a road test - i.e. engine cuts briefly then re-starts. Nothing however showed up on the diagnostic after the test, so they did two more road tests - this time with their laptop attached and constantly monitoring. On the first test the car behaved itself, but on the 2nd did what it has been doing - but the monitoring showed no change on any parameter. Conclusion was that whatever was going on, it was too brief to register. Based on others experiences, the garage advised us to change the Crank shaft (RPM) sensor as a likely cause. Collected the car yesterday and gave it a thorough run home - nothing happened and the car ran sweetly and better than it has for some time.

The garage (whcih is why I trust them) didn't charge for fitting and testing the sensor - only for the diagnostics carried out - total coast including the sensor - less than £100!

Hopefully, the car is cured, but I will come back and post again in a week or so.

Fresh update

After running perfectly for a week almost, it cut out on a short journey - then did so multiple times on the way into town over speed humps.

After that nothing and has behaved perfectly today.

Found an interesting article on Honest John website to do with CAN wiring - which can cause these srt of problems. ANyone know if the ECO uses this type of wiring in the loom?:bang::bang::bang:

This isn't a great deal of help but you're not alone! My 59-reg 1.2 Dynamic Eco does exactly the same; behaves itself perfectly most of the time but every now and again has an 'episode' where it momentarily cuts out going over speed bumps - it'll do this 4-5 times during a short journey (just about every speed bump taken less than super-gently) but then on the next trip, will behave faultlessly. It was doing this even before the warranty expired but I knew that I'd be wasting my time going to the dealer because of the random nature of the fault - it can go for months between episodes. I too have considered the crank position sensor (all you can do is check the wiring's secure), battery connectors, the inertia switch under the passenger seat, ecu connectors etc but can see nothing obviously amiss. I think mine's worse in wet weather - is yours?. I'm sort of wondering if leaving it parked facing uphill in wet weather might have a bearing on things (grasping at straws!) Logic suggests it's maybe related to something moving vertically and straining a connection perhaps...?

There is no logic. Mine sits on my drive, nice and flat. Now that you mention it, I have noticed that during the recent wet, snowy, cold weather it is more of a problem, but I don't think that is anything to do with it. My garage reckons its a wiring issue, and I found a site called Honest John (something like that) where he goes on about the type of wiring being a problem. I haven't contacted that site yet and I am monitoring the situation and trying to find a discernable pattern.:bang:

You'd be best not to waist your time in doing so also. Most of the stuff on there is a load of crap, and most the people and indeed 'john' haven't a clue what they're on about a lot of the time.

Yep - left them alone after I was re-directed to another section of the site. Update - Car died last night and wouldn't start. Checked codes this morning and it came up with U1700. Found some references to this on a French site and on this forum, but both for the Punto. I am assuming it is the same code - translates as
U1700=NCM-NBC communication(motor-ecu<.>body computer no sign./plausibility). Howver garage has just rung. They unplugged and re-connected the ECU - car started. So they have disconnected, cleaned and sprayed the connectors with a protective spray - the car is on a test run, so fingers crossed it is now fixed.

Three weeks since I went to the garage and it is working like a dream. All the garage did was to unplug the ECU, clean up the contacts, spray it with the cleansing fluid used on computer boards and re-assemble and test. Have gone over bumps, done all sorts of journeys with no problems at all. I now know what to look for and the best is that the garage so far hasn't charged me for their time - one up to the good guys.:):)

glad to here you've got it sorted my 59 active eco had the same problem and had to have a engine wiring loom to fix it but wasn't covered under warranty but argued the case of unfit for purpose with Fiat and got for free since then 8 months no problems
