For a while now I gave been able to detect a background engine noise on my Multijet. It sounds to me like a bearing type noise, so I'm thinking the culprits would be auxiliary belt tensioner or alternator/waterpump?

I took a little video on my phone so you kind folk on the forum might be able to tell from experience the noise is - it's obviously not the diesel rattle at tickover, but more the whirring type noise that can be heard in the background.

Any guidance would be appreciated - I haven't had much chance to get too stuck into this little problem yet, but whatever it is will be added to the list of "things to do", which now includes discs and pads, glow plugs, service, clutch replacement and now this!

Last time I heard that sound was when a rover 400 was about to eject it's auxiliary belt tensioner pulley due to total bearing failure. Could equally be any pulley on that belt so check them all.

Me thinks its the water pump as I,ve heard it on mine it wont get better they cost around £35 i fitted one on mine at 80000 and another but a different make last sunday at 125000 miles

either waterpump or chain rattle..

try to remove the belt for the waterpump and start it up.. short time! and hear if its still there.

Thanks for the replies, I don't think it's chain rattle but the water pump sounds a likely culprit. I'll get the aux belt off over the weekend and see if the noise goes away, which will at least narrow things down a little.

Hi, i have the exactly same problem! Was it all down to the water pump?
