Hi
1.2 8v 06 36K
Noticed recent oil leak. Highest point is the junction between the gearbox bell cover and sump. Can't see origin of it. Can't see how plug leak would track up there. Filter looks OK. No clutch slip.
Most likely sump gasket? (Hopes) How easy and successful to DIY?
Thanks

Thanks - it's of help and I saw that prev from a search I did. If it is the crankcase seal could a timing belt change affect the seal? - I had that done a few months ago. The FIAT mechanic's cd I have says this:
'The timing side and flywheel side covers guarantee the crankshaft seal and are fixed to the crankcase by bolts'. Would I have noticed anything else if it was the seal?

Also how hard is it to remove gearbox cover etc to discover source and would I be able to identify clearly whether it was the seal or the sump by doing that:?

You should be able to tell from the viscosity and smell of the oil - gearbox oil is much thicker than engine oil and has a pungent sort of sickly smell. Timing belt change wouldn't have any affect. Either way it has to be an engine-out job but - presumably - it's well inside warranty and you should - that's should - just be able to take it a dealer and say, "Find it and fix it. Please."

Er... so if the crankshaft seal is gone it will leak gear oil then? I'm sure it's engine oil.

Could be oil from gearbox input shaft though, I think it's right to call out the difference in smell.... either way the 'box has to come off.
