Technical D I Y 100 HP servicing

2.9 litres is the official capacity, but I've always found after a long drain and filter change it takes a little over 3 to get it bang on max.

Ben

We took the opportunity to service the 100HP today. To date, I have used a Fiat main dealer but as I am now planning to keep the car for the longer-term, we decided to do the work ourselves.

Sadly, none of the undertray bolts [10mm socket and T20R Torx required] had been previously greased and were awkward to remove. The same was true of the plug threads, which were totally dry [a smear of Never-Seez helps as they are going into aluminium]. The pollen filter cover had been fitted upside down by the dealer as well [and as mtsw reported, is a pain to fit - but at least I could use the dual controls to push the clutch pedal down from the passenger side!].

Here are a few photos:

Back in the good old days when I had no sense & even less cash I had to do all my own servicing (ahh, sweet memories!). I always used to buy a quick drain sump plug - only about a tenner but once fitted you only ever needed to connect the push on hose at each oil change - a real bonus as the oil coming out was always piping hot & you almost guaranteed to drop the sump plug in the oil catcher or get loads of hot oil run along the socket/ratchet & down your arm (sods law).
If you plan to do all your own servicing in the future then this might be the way to go - you might find that the hose can be connected without removing the undertray? (or possibly cutting three sides for a flap or using a hole cutter to access the plug?)

Seems to be the one around these days, and just less than £20. I'm certain the ones I bought had a bayonett fitting (like the gas hose behind a cooker).

In one of your photos there's a big trolley jack parked under the car.
http://ianjoberns.fotopic.net/p65093054.html
Just wondering where you jacked, did you use the bits at the front and the back corners (the fronts without the rubber plug and the backs with).
After reading some posts elsewhere (a skoda forum) I was thinking about getting a ice hockey puck which I gather is vulcanised rubber and a decent enough size to spread the load rather than a bit of wood.

Alan - I've just seen your post and have taken a photo of the jacking points:

We used the mounting point bolt [centre of photo] and a trolley jack with rubber pad on either side of the car. However, when I painted the brake calipers, I jacked where the hole is [top right]. You may need a jack either side to get it high enough to use axle stands.

Does that help? :)

you certainly know how to make a chap go outside and lie down in the dirt, many thanks for the excellent photo (think you must like taking them as much as you like your Panda) but of course I just had to go and look for myself. Hadn't thought of using the mounting point. Yours still looks very tidy underneath I would have thought the bolts might have started to get some surface rust but all very clean. Many thanks.

It's you who made me go outside and crawl around on the floor! :p

I know from my Honda days that having an extensive photo collection is always useful on forums.

I'm not sure if the underside of my car is clean or wholly-covered in dirt? You can see the current mileage above my avatar. Perhaps using the car so much actually does it some good?

Thanks for showing the mounting point, I have wondered where a good place was for a trolley jack and thanks to you i now know cheers

Hey folks,

Time to become a man and carry out my first service (my 57 100hp is my first car, had bikes until now!)

Can anyone suggest (or post a link) where to buy a service kit (previous link to ebay kit has ended)?

Would you definitely recommend replacing the pollen filter (only because I'm lazy and it sounds difficult)

Without sparking debate, am I safe to go for something like CASTROL GTX 10W40 Semi-synth oil?

Cheers,
Morgan

I just use Eurocarparts which will be a sin to some folks. Fully synthetic oil is cheap enough. Bosch oil filters are cheap.

Pollen filter - it's fiddly but not difficult.

K&N renewable air filter (dear-ish). Iridium NGK plus (again, don't bother....).

I won't slate you for Euro car parts ,
sometimes you can get a good deal.

Carparts4less ,just via post , can be good too, discount codes often around.
been going to GSF for years, much friendly staff than other other factors, but need decent discount code , normal pricing silly.

Mrauto can be good too worth price checking against others especially brakes.

It's a very easy car to service, things I would look out for are the sump plug which can be very easy to cross thread, if your checking or changing the gearbox fluid remove the filler plug first and be gentle with the plastic holder for the spark plug wiring as it falls apart quite easily.
