Didn't realise that the power steering was electric and Its not something I've come across/had before ! I know if the old type power steering belt snaps that the steering can become very heavy/stiff and hard to drive (although one of my mates drove an old Ambassador around for 7 months with it off !)

How does the electric power steering work and what would happen if it failed?

thanks

Steve

Steering goes heavy just the same and you get a warning light usually, most modern cars have electric power steering these days.

Thanks for that.. panic over ! :D (I had visions of nothing happening at all and being stuck in a straight line or something....)

Lol no... just try rolling the car engine off somewhere safe and quiet, you'll see what the unassisted steering is like (and unassisted brakes too :p )

Dear Fiat,

I was driving down a country lane when suddenly the car became possessed.. the wheel started to thrash about wildly, throwing me violently into the centre console and then the side window repeatedly... I've dislocated both thumbs, my left shoulder and bruised several ribs...this needs looking at urgently but not before the mother in law borrows it this weekend... :ROFLMAO:

(Disclaimer-no mother in laws were hurt during the making of this post)

All depends upon the fault though, as the steering can jurk/snap at you, and brake you hand/arm if not holding it properly  ;) (n)

Ah, forgot to say, only happens when turning the wheel quickly during things like parking manovours :p or did only then for me
