Hi! Have just completed 850 miles in Ireland without any problems except!!!..... has developed intermittent fault with lighting stalk. When on dipped setting and using indicators, dipped lights flash on and off which must be confusing for other road users!! Has anyone any experience of this - can it fixed by 'DIY' or is it a new dealer fitted part? Thanks!!

Thanks for that!! I think I am all out of warranty tho'! Is it the stalk or a 'switch' within the steering wheel assembly that causes the problems? Any thoughts gratefully accepted!

It was a couple of years ago, but as far as I remember it was the light stalk itself which was replaced. There's been a few others on here who had theirs replaced too...

Thanks again for that!! I guess it'll be a new stalk and with an airbag around it'll be a garage job! If anyone else has paid for this would be grateful for some ballpark figures........

How confident are you at DIY work

I've managed it myself (y)

It might also be repairable if just dirty contacts etc.

Have a look in this gallery for pics about it all etc

Have checked out your fotos and looks do-able except never dealt with an airbag before!! Is it true that you should disconnect the battery for 10 mins before starting the job???

I believe its 20min, but I left it 30 just incase. lol.

Airbags are easy to work with if you just respect them the same as you would domestic fireworks etc.

Hi most easterly!
Have obtaine a used stalk via a breakers yard and am ready to attempt the job as per your excellent fotos! The only part I cannot quite work out is.....does the airbag remove via the three 'holes' at the back of the wheel, and if so how? A million thanks for help!!!!

Using a tool of your choice working through the holes at the back of the wheel [1a] lever on the clips to disengage the airbag module ..lift the safety catch[2] to disconnect the electrical connection..:)

As PNL had said, you'll need to release the catches. Now this will either be a 5 min job, or 30 min job. All to do with luck of the draw, although the design does mean replace the airbag into place is a 2 sec job :p (y)

Here are some pic's of the clip's, that slide, so you can see how they work

Said clip pressed/slid to the side by my finger

Said clips in their normal possition (y)

Hope this helps.

Jon.

I was quite lucky I think......took 5 mins in the end but to begin with I was working blind as it were...then the first clip went and that was the clue to remove the others...actually found it harder to put the 3 screws back into the lower cowling when putting the trim back together!!!!!!!...beginners luck I guess. Just need to look at the combi switch I removed now to see if I can sort its contacts. Would't have started the job without the help tho'!!
