Apologies for yet another oil thread.

I have bought the service parts from our local fiat dealer for the last 2 services on our multijet. The oil they supply is branded Tutela and about £15 for 4.5litres.
They supplied me with some 5w30 the first time around and assured me it was what they would put in the car if they were to service it. Now I wasnt that worried and reasonable oil changed regularly is more than good enough for most engines.

This time around I got 10w40 Tutela. Which does reduce confidence in what they are saying slightly. Again the specs are close and I cant see it being a problem and it is semi sythetic which might be useful for the turbo.

Is it lucky dip in their storeroom? and what will I get next time around......might have more time to discuss it with them by then so could get an answer.

I also wonder how it will affect economy etc... this winter?

what does the hand book say to use? its usually quiet specific

Oils for
diesel engines
(1.3 Multijet
versions)

Synthetic-based oils, grade
SAE 5W- 40, that pass
ACEA B4, API CF and FIAT 9.55535- M2
specifications.

For regular operation of Multijet versions with DPF, use only original oil. In an emergency (lacking the original product) only top up
with max. 0,5 l and then drive immediately to the nearest Fiat Dealership.
If using non original SAE 5W-40 products, oils with minimum ACEA A3 specifications for petrol engines and ACEA B4 specifications
for Diesel engines are admitted; in this event top engine performance is not guaranteed.
Use of products with low-quality properties than ACEA A3 and ACEA B4 could cause damages to the engine that are not covered
by the warranty.
For very cold climate conditions, ask Fiat Dealership for the appropriate Selenia product to use.

Am I right in saying the 70bhp diesel panda doesnt have a dpf?

I am away from home for the next 6 weeks but will check to see what grade the oil is when I get back. Not sure how it will affect the performance of the engine but if they use the same oil in the 500 with dpf it may be automatically invalidate the warranty.

I'm the last person to insist on a particular brand of oil for Fiats.
However, the 1.3MJ engine should run on a 5W-40 synthetic oil and the use of 5W-30 or 10W-40 oils is not ideal.
Your supplying dealer has been sloppy in selling you the oils that they have supplied. They have sold you cheaper products, 5W-40 synth is expensive, but the oil in a 1.3MJ works a lot harder than in a 1.1 or 1.2 petrol engine.
The dealer can get away with putting sub-standard oil in at services as the resulting engine failures will occur way outside the warranty period. In fact, it might even drum up business for them when the engines or turbos fail outside warranty.
Sorry for my cynicism but if you plan to keep your 1.3MJ for a few years and a high mileage then use the correct oil.

The oil grade depends on the climate (as in weather, not economic)

The first number in an oil spec (the 5 here) is the 'thinness' of the oil when cold. (the 'w' stands for winter) In the UK, '10' is fine. '5' is fine in deep cold winters in Europe. No one in the UK will ever need 0 (zero).

The other figure is how 'thick' the oil stays when hot. 30 may not be 'thick' enough on a hot summer's day, when the oil will become hot and thin out too much. 40 will cover most European summers.

So, choosing 5w30 over 10w40 should in part be determined by the prevailing climate where you live. A wider-range oil (like the 5w40 recommended simply allows the same oil to be used anywhere, and make printing handbooks less complicated!

I know it's difficult but can you try and rephrase that as it doesn't make much sense.

I don't know if this will work but perhaps try a Romanian to English and English to Romanian translator and this might help :)
