Not sure where the EGR valve is exactly but if you follow the exhaust manifold out of the engine there will be a pipe coming off it at some point. Probably about 1/2" diameter. The EGR valve will be in that pipe somewhere.

Cant look at my car at the moment so the above is very rough.

Whats the PCV hose?

Thanks, Ivantate. Will do.
PCV=Positive Crankcase Ventilation (tube). Takes oil fumes from the engine and recycles them into the intake manifold.

All the best.

so does that mean these are getting to be a problem on higher mileage MJs? Very familiar with bypassing EGRs and cleaning pcvs on other common rails, and presuming the MJ will be as bad.

on the MGR/BMW 2.0d, the pcv filter was never a service item, and meant that engines after 85k ish were starting to gum up! Good source of cheap cars though, with a cheap 15 minute fix... ;-)

Has anyone done this yet?

Have just been looking at the EGR on our Panda with a view to sorting out the slight flat spot it has now got.

I found the EGR at the back right of the engine and started to take bits off to see what I could find.
First of all without knowing it I removed the solenoid which all seemed OK. Then I checked the tube going up into the inlet manifold and gave it a bit of a clean.
These werent particularly easy jobs with sausage sized fingers but not too bad, what I didnt do was actually find a valve.

Do I have to remove the whole silver canister from the back of the engine? It appears to have coolant hoses attached to it so do I need to drain the coolant to do this too?
Also, should the casting be removed from the engine or just the silver coloured part removed from the casting?

Did you get there "from above"?

can you post a pic? are they coolant hoses or are they from an intercooler (?)
I'm familiar with system on other cars and could probably work things out/where the valve is from a photo.
but hopefully someone professional will come along...

Might also be worth seeing if the flat spot goes with the solenoid switch plug out, disabling the system. This might raise an engine light, which will exytinguish when re-plugged, probably...

Cant really get a photo posted as I am on phone internet access at the moment. Definately coolant as they seem to go off to the heater afterwards.

To remove the solenoid and the bits so far it has been 80% above but to get to what I think is the actually valve atleast 80% will be from below at about 3/4 arms length so it can be done lying under the car.
