I have a 10,000 mile Sept 08 MJ and check the oil monthly.

In Jan the oil level was on the max level and when checked this last weekend it was on the min level and needed a litre of oil.

The car is never driven hard and is warmed up. It was run in as per recommendations.

Is it me or the cold weather, your advice is appreciated.

Many of the Panda engines consume some oil, including the MJ.
Could be that, around 10,000 miles, your engine is just loosening up a bit.
I don't think this is a cause for concern, just check the oil level fairly regularly, eg about once a week.
Although everything shrinks a bit in cold weather, I'm not sure if it is relevant to your increased use of lubricant.;)

Sounds a bit odd - my wife's MJ has done 6000 miles since new in October - checked the oil at the weekend and it was up to the max - I'll keep an eye on it.

Mine didn't use a drop in the 9K miles I had it. Not sure whether it's just variance in production or running the engine in in different ways has any effect.

FWIW I didn't spend very long running it in at all, just a couple of hundred miles, though i'd taken it to 4500revs at least once in the first hundred miles. In all the driving I did in it, my foot was on the floor for the most part once it had generally warmed up.

Similar thing with my 100hp, though i've had to top it up after 5K miles, so it does seem to burn a little bit.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it becomes excessive. Just keep an eye on it.

Mine has hardly used any in 26,000 miles (barring the obvious oil change) since new on a 55 plate. Didnt use anything like a litre of oil when running it. The cold weather didnt seem to make any difference to mine and its its kept outside (perhaps they get hardier with age?).

It's funny I also had a punto 85 elx 16v and loved it. did 109000 miles before the big problems started to come all at once. We also changed her for a Panda MJ. What do you think, twonk, of the panda in comparison (obviously not talking about power, handling, just talking generaly)?

Winter motoring can lead to increased oil consumption as the engine will be operating for longer outside its optimum temperature range so the main thing to now try and ascertain the number of miles it takes for the oil level to drop measurably (weekly check might be a good point to start). I'd not be too concerned but if it continues to use oil over the next couple of thousand miles, you can mention it at the first service :)

The Panda is the first car I've owned that's used any oil between services but I had assumed that was down to it having a fairly hard life....

16000km on my Multijet so far, and I've had to add 1/3rd of a litre all told.

The car mostly sees city and motorway driving and I like to give it the boot most of the time.

Hi bobajob,

Loved that 85 16v engine would rev all day got better the more miles you did and after 100000 miles still felt like it did after 10,000. Great ride but prefer the compact panda and the fun factor (even an MJ) and the feel of the throttle which is akin to an elastic band. Looking forward to the new 2 cylinder engines with the continously variable valve timing now that would get me back to petrol.

I 've owned my two 1.2 Dynamic aircon pandas since July 2004, and had oil changes with the 12 month recommended interval, but never did I have to top up any oil. In fact the level always stayed at the top mark...I' don't think its normal to loose a liter of oil in between oil changes. Maybe it should be investigated...

On certain Fiat engines, oil consumption is well known, but thought this was on older vehicles..

That said I had a Mk1 punto for 8yrs & never once did I have to top up the oil between services.
