That looks nasty, sorry to hear about it! Ironic thing is, on the estate this morning, there was a sheet of ice, i pulled the handbrake for a laugh and out came the back end, didn't realise the ice ran the entire length of the road and before i knew it, i was drifting sideways towards a kerb! Strange thing is that it stopped about 6 inches from it....(luckily)

Fell a bit stupid now seeing what could have happened, could have been worse though, if you'd have gone over the kerb, it would be through the wall no doubt?

Now what is it people say about ESP....

Hope you get it sorted soon though!! Looks not too good atm :(

I very much doubt ESP would have prevented that.

sorry to see that dave, some guy almost ran into the side of mine today, not happy.

still, on the bright side, that's the best full lock I've seen on a 100hp ;):D

You lot do know that ESP doesn't just stop spins.. it helps reduce understeer too? The milisecond that the fronts started going in a straight line rather than around the corner the car would have engaged the right rear brake to pull the car around tighter.

The ESP has been having a workout on the icey roads over the last few days. Even on Eagle F1s the car has handled better than my previous non-ESP cars. Can't say it would have prevented this accident but it might have.

It can only prevent so much, in the incident above, it would have more than likely put the car side on into the kerb, or induced a spin. ABS is pretty useless in icey conditions too

Sorry to hear about your accident. Its very frustrating when you have a slow speed bump.

I noticed the other morning my car refused to go up a slight incline, sitting in traffic at a T junction. It sat there wheelspinning, no matter how much or how I delivered the power.
In the end the I had to reverse, turn round and head a different way.
No other car had this problem except a Renault Megane sport. So I blame the tread pattern on my tyres!

Hope you get your car back soon.

How much would braking a rear wheel have helped on ice though?

So in Dave's situation it would have achieved bugger all. You can keep your ESP, why not just learn how to handle the car?

if it was me i wouldnt have wasted the the insurance access and ncd for that just get the bits fixed that need fixing and pay the cash should get them all out of the 250, less from a scrappy

I thought of that first but after seeing what it needs I reckon I would struggle to do it for less than the excess, my NCD is protected.

Also time and messing about sourcing parts, getting it to a garage, getting it fixed would be too much of a time consuming effort IMO.

The labour is £190, so to get all the parts (new alloy and tyre too) and 4 wheel alignment would cost a lot more than £120 I would have thought?

Should have it back early next week now, fingers crossed.

You're saying he crashed because he can't drive? Bit harsh.

ESP does things you cant. End of story.

How much would braking a wheel do? You'd be suprised, but you all seem to be luddites when it comes to driving safety aids.

So are people saying that Tiff Needell can't drive when he is on that video

I believe, like ABS, it should be standard on all cars. Yes, I admit, I have never needed to use it on the Panda but it is so reassuring it is there when you see videos like that.

Yeah, like there's alot you can do if you suddenly hit a sheet of ice. Are your Petter Solberg or something :p

things like ESP are sort of needed in most modern cars. in older cars with proper feeling through the wheels, slimmer tyres etc how much grip there is can be felt through the steering wheel.

if you feel it sliding understeering turn the wheel back to centre, brake if possible as gently as possible then turn as gently as possible which can slowly be increased. if all else fails try and get the wheels pointing at the kerb rather than at an angle.
that's what i've done before in my old car don't know if it's the right thing to do but it worked for me in that car.

I'd agree. If you think there's no way of stopping hitting an obstruction like a curb then face the wheels straight at it. Obviously depending on the situation, most of the time you may not have enough time to react properly.
