Well after spending the last few months considering replacing the GP with a 100HP but not actually testdriving one, I finally found a dealer with one in stock.

I paid them a visit this morning and took their 57plate white 100HP out for a very enjoyable drive :)

The test route comprised a touch of dual carrageway, breaking off into some tight town roads with some stop/start traffic lights/crossings and then going on to 15/20minutes of country lanes before making our way back to the dealers.

It gave me a superb chance to test the 100HP in it's ideal habitat, the country lane. I found pickup through the gears was excelent cinsidering the power/torque figures for the car and the 6 speed box was very slick and precise. Steering weight felt good in normal mode and perfect in Sports mode (didnt think I would notice the difference but I did).

The car felt planted and very willing when putting it through some tight corners and a bit of left>right>left action. Change of direction came almost instantly and the steering feedback was very positive.

Around town it had pickup and go no matter what gear you're in (within reason of revs) and it happily made good progress through the traffic. It's size was a big advantage when negotiating tight town roads with cars parked on both sides of the roads.

As for the well reported negative notes about the Panda, I did notice some pogoing on the country lanes and it did crash a bit on some of the less tidy roadworks but this really didnt feel intrusive or take away from the driving enjoyment. I also noticed what people were saying about the throttle being a little over-responsive during stop/starting in Sport mode, but it got better towards the end of the testdrive so I will put it down to something that you learn to drive around. The brakes however felt pretty responsive without being instrusive so I'm getting it's got the updated servo-assistance (if this actually exists)

As for the layout of the car, I found the seat position to be better than I expected, despite it's high stance it makes you feel well supported and in control. Rear leg space seemed respectable given the car's size, I wouldnt want to be a rear seat passenger for a long journey but short trips would be a pleasure.

Afterwards we did discuss prices but they were offering £2k less for mine than I think it's worth privately and this was up against the £8k that they wanted for a used 57plate 100HP with no options.

I showed the salesman Fiat Supasaver's price and he still wouldnt budge so I left. As I was getting into my car he came out and said that if I sell the GP privately then he will match Supasaver's price on a new 100HP. I said that I will be in touch.

........ So the GP needs a few bits here and there but then it will be going up for sale so that I can get a 100HP.

I've always loved the way it looks, the tech spec is superb and now I can confirm that I love the way that it drives.

Keep your eyes peeled because there will be a new 100HP owner in the ranks very soon :D

nice little summary of your first test drive... echoes alot of the things I noticed in my first drive last week :)

Good luck getting it for the price you want! I'm in the usual dealer discussions at the moment.

yeah sell it privately if your in no rush and get that extra bit more for it. :) im surprised they aint budging as im surecar dealers are not doing well at the moment with all this credit crunch etc. i remember when i worked at peugeot....at christmas time....there was No body walking in and we was discussing that anybody that comes in...give them preety much anything just for a sale lol.so if any one would of walked in we would of begged them hhahaha. keep nagging them espesh now its coming up to winter+the credit cruch...they must budge lol.good luck mate

Cheers for the comments guys (y)

As for budging on price, apparently last month Fiat hit record sales for the year.

I always intended to sell privately but the dealer really wanted to offer me a part exchange so I decided to humour him.

I saw they'd done well on market share with the new 500... but record sales? Doubt it. A percentage of a small number is still a small number!

It seems silly that they were trying to charge £8000 for a 2nd hand car when you can get a new one for less.

I've noticed that a lot of salesmen don't seem very interested if you don't want finance and you don't want to part exchange. The Fiat dealers always seem to be enthusiastic about their cars though. My local Renault dealer went into talking about finance before I had even driven the car and wasn't too keen on the car anyway.

I think I'd regret swapping a more 'refined' car for a gokart style one.

I can see where your coming from. After driving the suzuki swift 1.5 (a teeny bit quicker that the panda 100bhp) I loved the fun of the drive and almost traded my GP in for one, but it just didnt have that, "grande-ness" if that makes any sense.

The GP felt more solid and classy, despite the fun gokart style swift being better built/assembled, better quality and better engine (1.5 16v VVT vs 1.2 8v).

Glad I didnt choose the fun one in the end....:nutter:

I regret having it for work 100%, the bumpy ride over responsive throttle 4 seats knocking tapping rattles etc, it was never going to work too well, but i have given it a fair chance and doing 35/40,000m pa in town it makes it a real pain sometimes, if i can sort out a deal Fiesta Zetec Climate/ corsa SXI etc i will do but still a great little buz box of a car.

Thanks for the comments guys (y)

As for the GP, the 'grande-ness' that you refer to is kind of what I dislike about the car. The GP is quite a capable car however you never get to experience that because there is a lack of feel, lack of feedback and overall a lack of a real driving experience.

The Panda seems to be well screwed together and is a very capable car. Although it doesnt appear to be kitted out as much as the GP upon first glance, you soon realise that the only 'standard' toy that the GP has over the Panda is the proper Blue&Me system (which I will miss) but other than that, the Panda has all the 'leccies, Climate Control and MP3 stereo as standard.

It's not that I dont like the GP, it's a gorgeous looking and well spec'd car. Unfortunately I dont really enjoy driving it, partly due to the diesel attributes and partly due to the lack of real feeling previously mentioned.

This isn't the first time I've dropped down the Fiat range scale, it wasn't much more than a year ago that I left my Bravo HGT in favour of a Punto GT3. You notice the difference in build quality, kit and refinement between the two but I'll tell you something, when I look back at my previous cars the Punto GT is the one that I miss.

I recently Crashed My 100hp Due to a diesel spill and my insurance company are replacing it with a new 58plate crossover black 100hp which i really dont want, as i so much want to change for a Gp 1.9 M Jet, have been looking at a new one but payments are coming out too high,

Ive been trying to haggle with the sales manager but they are not budging which i find hard as you would think they want a sale!

I was expecting more from the panda when i got it but was sadly let down, yes it has a good standard spec and was fun to drive but i just expected much more, but i did just jump in and buy one without even driving it

saying that i have never driven a Gp but have convinced myself i want one lol

I'm annoyed with the dealership I'm dealing with not wanting to do a deal... they've just dropped their asking price by £300 too.

:bang:

Going to give them a call tomorrow morning with a final deal or no deal :)

If you were underwhelmed by the Panda, I seriously recommend you get a test drive in a GP before placing an order. :ROFLMAO:

Chris

Couldn't agree more with you Chris.

It's not because the GP is a bad car, it's a very pleasent choice of hatchback however in my opinion it is NOT a drivers car (at least the M-Jet isn't).

With regards to you get a 1.9 M-Jet, it will have to be either a pre-reg 58 plate or an unregistered 'stock' car, Fiat are no longer taking orders on the 1.9 8v M-Jet because they've discontinued it and are in the process of replacing it with the 1.6 16v M-Jet as found in the new Bravo.

If you're looking for a nice car to drive that has plenty of toys and will happily rack up mile after mile then the GP M-Jet is ideal however if you looking for a fun drivers car then I personally dont think you will find it in the M-Jet (I know I haven't).

They're better with a remap but still dont drive like a hot hatch (I've not come across a diesel that does yet). Also they might benefit from an uprated suspension setup as it's too soft and unsettled around corners in standard guise.

Good luck with them Kerr. Give them hell mate, they can always go lower :D

The only thing I could compare it to (its a bit of an extreme lol) is that eposide of top gear where they aim to find the best driving road in the world.

Clarkson takes a Lamorginhi gallardo
Hammond takes a Porsche 911 GT3RS

And May takes a Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24 (basically a stripped out race car)

Now I'd kill to own a Vantage Race car, but james may ended up driving it naked and hating it because it was that hot, noisey and uncomfortable due to the pure racing setup.

Now I'm not saying the 100hp Panda is a race car, but its designed for a fun and gokart like driving experience and not the chore of driving to and from work each day over the sh*tty UK roads.

Which is exactly the reason that I prefered my 1.2 slow Grande Punto over the much faster, revvier and more agile suzuki swift.

I'm sure others must agree on what I'm trying to say?

I had a 1.4 GP Sport as a courtesy car when my Panda was in for its service. It was less well specced, slower, thirstier, the steering was too light and lacked any feedback, brakes had a lot of dead travel and very little bite, ride was too soft and there was poor visibility with the big A pillars and odd mirrors.

Did have a much better driving position than the Panda though :ROFLMAO:

I do 20+ k miles a year and chose the Panda over my super-comfy mile-munching Mondeo. Perhaps I'm crazy ... would explain the insane grin after every drive ;):D

See when you put it like that Fention I completely understand what you're getting at mate. However the 100HP isn't as bad over UK roads as people seem to think and it only really gets upset on the rougher of the country lanes which to be fair the GP also does with it's heavy front end and 17" wheels running 205/45/17 low profile tyres.

My main reason for the switch is that I really cant stand driving a diesel any more, I want to get back into a small/fun/revvy hatch.

Maybe if I had gone for a T-Jet rather than an M-Jet then I might be sticking with it a while longer........ but I didnt so I'm not

Plus the fact that I can sell my 07plate GP with 22k on the clock for more than I can buy a brand spanking new 100HP for. Also my insurance company have said that they'll refund me some money if I swap over to the Panda so it's a win win situation for me :D

The excitement and fun drive of the 100HP makes driving less of a chore! I drive an hour each way and on my route there's a few uneven bits of road and a few of those dips, but they just make me smile, and they certainly wake you up on a lethargic day!
