I'd like to ask what the front fog lights are good for, obviously, they should
help visibility in fog, but I did not notice anything when I used them in fog.
Only they look good.

You have discovered the true purpose of front foglights.
They are designed entirely to look good and have no practical purpose whatsoever.
In fact, they are just like ski hats from that point of view.

Ski hats:confused: Don't they keep your head warm :p

Again, Front Fogs are for :tosser: to use during good visability conditions to make them stand out so you know they are a :tosser: and that's its safe to say keep your distance :p

Pees me off people who use them when they shouldn't

Fog lamps should and are designed to illuminate the road directly infront of the car (particularly the road verge/kerb) with a very wide beam pattern at night, during fog in daylight they are pretty useless other than other drivers being able to see you better.

So if they didn't work well when you used them either it was fog during daylight or your foglights are not set correctly

The other thing to mention is that in thick fog, dipped beam can reflect straight off the fog as well and limit vision severely so having a pair of lights in a much lower position helps overcome this and you can turn off dipped beam.

I've not used the Panda fog lights in fog yet, but I did use the Mondeo's in really thick fog and was impressed with them.

They can help when driving down country lanes, as said they light up more of the sides of the road.

Other than that I have found them completely useless. Totally rubbish in fog, too.

I honestly think they are utterly useless/pointless. The trouble with them is that because they light up the side of the road they encourage you to focus on this, when really what you should be doing is looking ahead.

I just hate it when people have them on and dazzle you, just because they think it looks good. (n)

They are the bane of every other motorists lives as soon as the clocks go back. Must admit if someone behind me has them on I just put on my rear fog as well, going by their logic it must be foggy so I help them out in this respect. (y)

It's odd that in the UK it is illegal to use them if its not foggy, after a spate of on the spot fines the police now don't seem to bother. Considering this would probably be a big on the spot fine earner I'm surprised they don't pursue it.

Now we are seeing them with high wattage bulbs in which blind oncoming drivers as foglights aren't dipped. Quite frankly it's pathetic that the morons think it 'looks so cool' to drive with them on with ' Hey look at me! I've got foglights & maybe you haven't' I'm seriously cool don't you think?
Well no actually, I and many others think your a complete tard

The most unsafe thing I've seen is people who drive around with sidelights and fogs on at night.

People seem to think they're a substitute for dipped beams...... and it's not just 'yoots', I'm seeing an increasing number of middle aged women and elederly gents doing this.

you can use your FRONT foglights in heavy rain or snow too

in fact the new highway code appears to have changed its wording
Rule 236

You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

see no mention of fog IIRC the last HWC had a section for Front fog lights and a section for Rear foglights basicly front ok in snow, fog, rain, rear ONLY Fog

as well you could only use your Rear fog light when visibility is seriously reduced to 100M

just for you Izzy

:D
but advocating blinding oncoming cars with main beam :shakehead:

I guess the most annoying thing is that you don't really need foglights front or rear at all.

Reckon i use my rear foglights about once or twice a year. When i had front fogs on the beemer, i never used them in 18months. Utterly pointless and what was worse is all they do is get damaged. I'd happily delete them as an option from any car i buy if i could.

I think a lot depends on where you live as i use mine a fair bit work is down a B-road which gets the tidal fog from the river humber

I'm in a simmilar position just off the coast in a normally very wet Cumbria. They are usefull but only when used when required otherwise they are a pain in the a$$ with the :tosser:'s that use them continually.

It's a pet hate and usually always issue a ticket when I see halfwitts using them.

just a quick Question since the HWC seams to have been rewritten...

is it now acceptable to use the rear fog light in HEAVY rain on the motorway where there is a huge amount of spray??

At one point the HWC referred to Rear fog lights only been used in Fog but not

My understanding is that it always has been: the Code merely advises that they can be used in 'poor visibility'. 'Poor visibility' can be due to fog, heavy rain or falling snow, dense smoke, etc. If I recall correctly, elsewhere in the Code 'poor visibility' is defined as being able to see less than 100metres clearly. This is the distance between the markers at the side of a motorway, so if you can see more than one marker, the fog lights should not be used. Or, its typically 5 streetlights on an A-Road.

As an aside, how many of you know its illegal to drive with sidelights only if you need the lights on, unless the limit is 30mph or less?
