As some of you may already have an inkling, i'm not over the moon with MJ that i bought last november.

I want something that is going to make me smile even just a little bit. Unfortunately the MJ can't seem to do that. So i'm going to get something a little less sensible that will be fun.

Initially I was over-awed by the 500 Abarth. Cute cheeky ought to be fun etc. But now i'm not so sure it isn't more of a marketing excercise and maybe isn't going to as driver focused as i expected it to be. Not being able to disable the ESP is seriously (n) in my eyes. Price seems to be hiking too. (n)

Other option is the Twingo RS where you can turn off the ESP and it ought to have a cracking chassis knowing renail.

The price of a Twingo RS is going to be around 12K by the time i've specced it up.

Now my partner says that he is a little unhappy with me stretching my budget and a friend of mine has access to his mum's 100hp which he keeps raving about. This guy has a caterham and drives a 5 series normally. That impressed me.

The price difference between a 100hp and a Twingo RS is about 3K. A 100hp can be had for under 9K without too much of a problem. It may provide enough fun for me to enjoy it. I'm not worried about drag races, I know on paper it isn't quick by any means but a nigh on 50% power increase over the MJ has got to be noticable right?

So i'm going to test drive one see what I think.

Off I trotted to my local dealer, saw the guy we originally dealt with last year who we get on well with. He wanted to be very helpful except the dealership had gone into administration the night before! (n) FFS. He suggested supersaver which i'm obviously aware of, but now i need to find somewhere where i can organise a test drive. He suggested Platts in Stoke which is a little bit of a trek but do-able.

Hopefully my original dealer will be saved by a buy out or something and then we may able to do business hopefully. If i like it i'm thinking Red NO ESP and a subwoofer would do me. (y)

Funnily enough my partner said to me, 'look if it costs a couple of grand its got to be worth it to stop the constant moaning about the MJ!'

LOL! Priceless, the kind of thin my missus would say (y)

Hope the test drive goes well, I'm sure you'll love it. However, I would say make sure you include the bumpiest most rutted road you know on the test drive; it seems that the most common reason people are put off a 100HP is the teeth-rattling ride.

Well i'm not mega fussed if the ride is firm, you should try the integra, some of my previous cars had aftermarkt suspenders on them too, so i don't mind feeling connected to the road, but will obviously see how it copes with bumps.

I think my biggest problem is going to be finding one to test drive... still i'll do some phoning around tomorrow see what i can find.

....I know on paper it isn't quick by any means....

On standard paper maybe, but you get it on some nice 200gsm Cartridge and boy you'll have some fun! :p

Be interested to hear what you think if (and when) you get to drive one.... (y)

Oh and don't forget to press the SPORT button! ;)

Hi,

In case you didn't know, Platts did have (may still) a pre reg 100hp in red for about 8.5k when I was looking for a Panda a few weeks ago.

Although Platts are my local Fiat dealer, I bought mine from Mangoletsi in the end (about 50 miles round trip away) as Platts made me an awful offer on my previous car in part ex and in general were a bit 'un interested' in doing a deal I found. A shame really as the new Platts premises are fantastic and Ive bought several new cars from them over the last 10 years or so.

If you've got to travel anyway, it might be worth a trip over to Mangoletsi for a look as well - when I was buying my MJET they had a couple of recent, used 100hp's for sale with about 3k on the clock(s).

I have to say I found the whole experience with Mangoletsi far more pleasant, they seemed genuinely interested in coming to a deal that made me happy.

I don't work for and have never worked for either by the way....just passing on my thoughts as I'd hate for you to spend half a day going to Platts and back and having the kind of underwhelming experience I had with them on the last occasion.

All the best (y)

Acceptable ride quality for a road car is, of course, a subjective thing. Regardless of previous experience I would definitely agree with Schwenck and urge everyone to try a 100hp out on rough and smooth roads.

When I test drove it I didn't find anything wrong with the ride, although I do drive a Seicento, which probably isn't the particularly soft anyway. I went over a couple of speed cusions and they were fine, but I did go over them at a very slow speed.

I find a lot of cars to be too soft and bouncy though. I wasn't too keen on the 1.2 Dynamic that I test drove, and it seemed to make a horrible noise on one road.

I got mine for £8225 with just 90 miles on the clock, 08 plate.

Love it more than my Gen 7 Celica, by a long way! Never ever thought i'd say that. And i've not driven it over 5000rpm yet :D

Platts (Stoke on Trent) have an Red '08 with 10 miles on it for £8495
http://www.plattsgarage.com/

GK (Sheffield) have an Black '08 ex-demo for £8995
http://www.gkgroup.co.uk/

Woodleigh (Chesterfield) have an White '08 with 1300 miles on it for £7990
http://www.woodleigh-fiat.com/

All pretty close to you for a thrash...I mean test-drive! :D

Thank you loads for that!! I've fired off an email to Platts. I just hope it doesn't have ESP... but defo worth a shot. Has to be red!

Also thanks Ian as well, top stuff. (y)

Have to say, the ride really doesn't bother me. Speed bumps are a pain yes, but fortunately I can usually avoid them. I think anyone would struggle to find another car for the same money that has the standard equipment it does and get so much fun out of it - go for it!

Given mine the full works today and it looks like brand new again - can recommend the new Autoglym aquawax too, great stuff.

Its funny i'm quite looking forward to a test drive. If i likes I will buy. My partner (the sensible one) is very keen on the 100hp as he doesn't want to me to stretch my finances to a twingo RS and he likes the panda. Mind you i'm more than happy with the build quality of our current MJ, can't fault it really so no concerns with that.

I'm just hoping the one at platts dealers doesn't have ESP.. still we'll see. All excited now! :)

The Twingo does of course have one of the best chassis ever though..

The same as the old clio sport's ;)

Arrghhhh... la, la, la... not listening... or trying not to... :(

I too reckon the twingo RS will be an absolute cracking drive. The question is is the panda 100hp enough fun for the 3K saving i'm likely to make with teh difference in purchase price.

Good luck with your test drive at Platts, if they still have the red one it looks gorgeous.

I would have gone for it myself had they made me a better offer on my last car in part ex to be honest. In the end I went with an MJET like yours from Mangos as you now.

Hope they look after you OK too(y)

Sorry if my post was a bit vague, I didnt go for the 100hp in the end - I went for an MJET fom Mangoletsi.

Its red though, so it could have been me.....give us a flash next time (headlights only of course!) (y)

Not trying to crash your hopes BUT I test drove the 100HP, MJ 1.2 and the 1.1 and decided that the 100HP just wasn't fast enough to sway me away from the MJ.

I say that not to dwindle any thoughts as it's a terrific car, but don't get your hopes up too much as you will not see a 50% power increase. The increase is simmilar to that of the 1.1 to the MJ as I tested one of those as well.

I do hope that it meets your needs but if you get into it with too much anticipation it may not fulfill them.....

good luck.

the trouble with testing a 100hp and an MJ is that the MJ has extra torque which makes you feel like you're going faster than you actually are, the 100hp is awesome fun but it isn't a fast car, just ticks lots of boxes (y)
