General 100hpJames's Panda back from the scrap!

Wouldn't this be of interest to Trading Standards or the Transport Agency?

Feel sorry for the person buying it not being in the know of the history of the car, I know I would be pee'd off if I bought it and found out after.

copy of the email I sent...

Hi,
I was involved in an accident on July 5th 2007 which you dealt with, my vehicle was a total loss. It has come to my attention that the vehicle is being sold again and is not recorded as a write-off, I was wondering who is/was responsible for recording this as the future owner is in for a shock? Any information greatly appreciated.

thanks,
James *****

Good stuff. Very responsible thing for you to be doing.

Assuming that the car has been repaired to a decent standard, being a cat D is not a big deal in itself and so long as that's reflected in the price you pay, then it's still a bargain. The problem for the seller is that most people who buy cars off ebay tend to be clued up and do their homework - after all what's a few quid on a HPI check when you're spending thousands.

Interesting that the scrapper he bought it from believed it to be HPI clear - I wonder if he double checked that before he bought it to fix up!

Well it ends in 5 hrs and as soon as it does, the winning bidders identity will be shown. May be worth sending them a message linking to here so he/she knows what their walking in to before parting with their cash.

I feel sorry for the guy who did it up in a sense as it seems he may well have bought it and repaired it in good faith if it is HPI clear, but at the end of the day, he's still repaired a car that has had its structural integrity comprimised and selling it as if its never been in a smash. Also i'm fairly sure the 18months of manufacturers warrenty he states would be void due to this.

Either way it should definatly be HPI recorded.

in that case it must be the third party's insurance, think it was tesco, as mine wouldn't have had a say in it.

gary, lots of different stories in replies, wish they'd just say, 'it's been in an accident and we don't have the original wheels'

this might sound funny.

But if i bought this car, is there a risk of the car being taken off me and being crushed?

Or is it just the fact it was cat D and not recorded as this?

Because £3000 seems fairly cheap for a 100HP, i spoke to someone and they said that cat D's are worth about 60% of the normal retail price. This sound about right? As long as they have been certified to be back on the road?...

Or is the panda so badly damaged it'd be dangerous driving it?

you'd have to see the quality of the repair and that would require stripping it again, the car is also on auto trader for £6995, its £3000 on ebay because thats all thats been bidded so far, I wouldn't like to drive it again put it that way...

A cat D just means it's repairable but uneconomical to repair. So, the car would be yours and I don't think there are any things you need to do to prove its roadworthiness but I'd be looking to prove this ahead of buying - after all if someone is confident in their repair, why would they worry.... One thing to note is that the Cat D cannot be removed from the car's history even if it is repaired to as good as new standard.

I think it's hard to nail a figure on resale as it all depends what kind of person it looking to buy. I did read somewhere that dealers won't take them as part exchange, but I think that might depend on the dealer and whether they ask the right questions to find out if it's HPI clear ;)

If someone buys it, they need to know. Then checked over. Can't get money back though can they? Limit on protection?

Anyone near the M6, J19 or whatever. Could cause acrash or even worse death.

Wonder what happened after the original ad on ebay, as it wasnt bought and was relisted, but no-one bought it then either as there was no bids and it doesnt say auction ended with Buy It Now.

Maybe the seller doesnt know its full history!

he claimed not to in the reply to me.

I did try to find the garage, as nickys uni house is only 30 mins away, without an exact address I found two garages but no sign of the panda, there were cars locked around the back though, only drove past in the car

Not sure about how it will drive, but i suspect having a ton of car dumped on it previously could have dangerous consequences in the event of a crash. The car is never going to be as structurally sound as it was new with all that shock and stress put on it.
