Hello good friends and fans of the Panda:

124.html

I am the proud owner of a bright orange Cross here in Switzerland. The little car is amazing. It has the 1.3 Multijet Turbodiesel. I am interested in boosting the power and torque using a Powerclick chip.

My question to the more knowledgable fans here: I have heard and read conflicting reports on the affect this may have on the reliability of especially the transmission and clutch. Is this true? I know for a fact it invalidates the guarantee from Fiat in terms of the gearbox (that is if you tell them.) The power gain seems modest but there is a 45 Nm increase in torque, which is quite a bit. Any ideas, or should I just keep the car stock standard? That would be a shame though, but I will heed your advice.

Best to all here!

Depends on the gearbox fitted, check out the fiat power train website and identify it. I know the Torque would be beneficial but when will it be applied, it you can't use it at the required revs it's delivered at it will be a pointless upgrade. You'll need to know this as I don't think you have low ratio box like bigger 4x4s, it is this that enables them to be run at slow speed whilst delivering the required torque. I think my preferred option would be to go for a re-map to get the required torque at usable revs, and not an all encompassing chip upgrade. The 4x4 system should be well man enough as I believe it is made for Fiat by Steyr, and they make some heavy duty running gear.

One thing to think about is how you will be driving the car. If you're using it for full-bore racing starts then the additional torque will cause extra wear and tear on the clutch and possibly transmission. If you're just using it to give you a bit of extra oomph on the motorway there will be a negligible increase in wear as you will be probably calling on it above the peak torque rpm.

Hey thanks for the advice.

I will be using this mostly for city-use and travelling across Europe, so I am looking for increased flexibility for highway travelling and at low revs. And nope, I won't be charging from traffic light to traffic light, and I won't be doing any off-road stuff either. For my thrills I have a Lotus Esprit Turbo SE , but the Fiat will be my trusty adventure companion. It sounds as if I can go ahead with the Powerclick conversion. It is not that pricey and it is DIY plug and play. Power increase is a modest 10 hp but torque is +45 Nm.

BTW: I get such nice reactions to the car from people here in Switzerland. I think the orange is a big hit in a country where everybody is driving boring black, grey or silver. The Cross is also fairly uncommon even here, so everybody is surprised that it is 1) 4x4 and 2) turbo-diesel.

This sort of conversion should also be good for fuel consumption at the same revs I am travelling now? If the power is not abused, surely consumption is improved? Am I right in this assumption?

Thanks again! ;)

You can get 105BHP total out of a remap on the multijet - however the Panda's engine is also found in the Punto where it has more torque than the Panda. This is because the Pandas gearbox is only able to cope with tourqe below 145NM - anything above that can cause trouble. I would speak to a Fiat technician before you do it.

Hello again!

Due to the advice I got here I decided not to go ahead with a Powerclick conversion for extra power - it seems that the concensus here is that the extra 45 Nm will not be healthy for the gearbox. This is a real pity, I was really looking forward to this conversion: As a matter of interest: it is the unit shown at the bottom: what exactly is that? A powerchip? A remap?

Could be wrong, but it looks like a tuning box to me. It'll basically plug into one of the sensors (typically common rail sensor) and fiddle with the signal to cause the engine to overfuel. I've run them in previous cars and they're very effective, but obviously not as good as a remap which also allows boost to be changed too.

correct that boost will increese abit 0.1 0.15 ...
the box in the picture is a fuel rail boost box works well on this engine! i can only speak for my self and the tuning i have used.. i get a big boost in power at 2500rpm and there is the problem.. the standard clutch cant take it if i turn the fuel rail pressure further up..

have broken 1gearbox but unknown if it was because of this.. (note not the diff.)

the increase of boost doesnt matter as the engine runs fine anyways and the turbo dosent seem to care.. i my self run 1,45 bars just under the max the (panda fitted 70hp) MAP sensor will alow 1,5bars boost.

i have changed my injectors once.. and it could be because of the increased wear from the higher pressure.. OBS these things cost money! directly from fiat 700pounds UK..each.

i fitted a larger intercooler + boostcontroler and that had 86hp as i recall and 180nm with the box it has 106hp and 216nm

dont go there! you need new clutch.
