Hi

Have a Panda Eleganza 04 and the airbag failure warning message came up recently and then after reading the handbook etc. didn't come up again until today where it flashed airbag testing and then airbag failure! and then went off.

The red light in the dash hasn't come on yet. So I was wondering whether anyone has had this problem and knew the cure or is it a matter of an expensive job down the dealer?

Any help much appreciated. Thanks

had something similair, was the passenger airbag coming a little loose, was replaced under warranty, later it happened again, but wasnt loose, found that switching it off (key in the glovebox) wait a little, then back on again, reset the warning, and hasn't appeared since(y)

Hi, got same car but an 05 (marmite!)12 years later and ive just had the same message!
Turning the key in the glove compartment a few times cured this until the other day where the windscreen vent wouldn't work(its the air con one and electric!) so i have the dash a bit of a thump!
Got vent back but then that message which only comes on once with no warning lights on the dash!

Wow, what a thread revivial!

Marmite is clearly at a very different stage in life to the car that started this thread, and has done well to make it this far. Technically the entire SRS system is likely now out of date, (there should be a punched sticker somewhere in the car), but almost nobody bothers about this as the cost of replacing the necessary parts would far outweigh the value of the car.

My guess is it's something similar to the OP's problem, and a connection somewhere in the circuit has gone high resistance. I guess the first step is to check any connectors or modules that are reasonably accessible; if the message still appears, then it's MES time.

Fingers crossed, and good luck.

Usuall issues with these is either the switch in the glovebox, (Punto had an issue some time back, possibly same switch), or the clockspring under the steering wheel.
Glovebox switch easy. Clockspring not so much. Usually supplied as part of complete switch assembly, and correct one must be chosen, but once identified, just the clockspring may be available from eBay.
Needs a diagnostic check to pinpoint which.

Punto Mk2 also had a seat pressure switch that raised air bag faults. I don't know how Panda detects a passenger in the seat. Seat belt maybe?

I had the issue on my Mk2 Punto I'd unplugged/plugged the wiring connector but no change. MES scan said seat switch. Took the seat out, replaced the connector and problem solved.

Definitely same switch ( the lock barrel is interchangeable )
I broke my switch removing glovebox

Scrapyard 188 punto supplied a working one

This job got me into MES.. ;)

correct changed mine for the punto and swapped the barrel over so the key still fitted

From memory you need the full MultiECUscan to read the airbag. But with the correct cable it give a proper error message on the lines of short in passenger airbag circuit or similar.
