General crunchy gearbox??

I've got this problem aswell, mainly going into 1st and 2nd.

Its getting a service at the end of the month so i'll get them to have a look.

It could be a problem with the gear linkage, i has similar problem with my old car.

Keep us updated on how you get on.

I get excessive movement on the gearstick when lifting/applying the throttle slightly, almost as if a mounting has gone, but it hasn't :S will have to get it looked at soon, but it's not causing any problems.

Phew......I can actually say that I haven't experienced this one......yet.

Did have this with the GTV before I sold it - linkages need greasing. But that was mainly the gear stick not automatically finding neutral position as you moved from 2nd to 3rd.

To-date I find the gear stick position and quick shift really good on the Panda.

I'm getting a bit of stickiness going from 5th to 6th but it's not grinding as yet

Reverse can be a sod to get when cold, usually requires a bit of force (indicating linkage alignment issues maybe?). However, no other issues through other gears.

I was going to start a thread with exactly the same problem, I am experiencing a horrible graunch changing from 5th down to 4th and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd. Even if i go back to neutral first and then engage 4th it still crunches!! However, having just had my first service nothing was mentioned although i forgot to flag it up at the time (rushing to get back to work ,lol).

My 2.5 year old 4x4 has always been prone to produce a crunch if the gearbox is warmed up and I change gear quickly. It occurs going from 3 to 4 usually. I've decided to accept it as a characteristic rather than a fault because I don't really want the dealers to remove and rebuild the box, if that's what it might come to. Call me distrustful, but there is just too much potential for mistakes in such a big job and the car works just fine all round as it is now. This characteristic is not worsening so I don't think it will cause long term problems.
My thoughts on the cause? Well I seem to be beating the synchromesh. The synchromesh may be weak on this gear. The 4x4 uses a different gear oil from other models, maybe this lubricant is not quite right which would affect meshing of gears and synchro. With having a drive output to the rear wheels the 4x4 gearbox will have design differences from other models which may be having an effect here.
I just have to remember to take gearchanges a fraction slower. When the car's out of warranty I might contact someone like Castrol and experiment with different types and grades of gear oil but I would not risk this without some sound and reliable advice.
I would be interested in comments from the dealers on the fault on the other cars here. I doubt that it is a clutch or gear linkage problem, it's much more likely to be a gear oil or box internals issue.
