Anyone have this? Occasionally change into second, clutch all the way to the floor and there is a crunch like you get when you put it into reverse too quickly.

Hi RichyP - No have not come across that (yet). What year is your Panda, Petrol or Diesel (Gearbox is different or at least the ratios are). Do you spend a lot of time in traffic?

I get an odd crunch going into reverse - my fault for trying to engage reverse too soon - no probs if I pause a half second or so.

Its a multijet diesel. I spend about 50% of time driving the car in traffic. Oh well I will wait to the first service and get it seen to then, as it has only happened twice.

Happens in 3rd and 4th on my 4x4 with a rapid gear change on a hot gearbox. You're beating the syncromesh so change a bit slower. I suspect it is a gearbox characteristic, I wouldn't risk letting a Fiat dealer take out the 'box to try to remedy. If they suggest a change of gear oil, let us all know the grade of oil and if it fixes the problem as this may be of use for future reference.

Yes, I agree.
Main thing is to change gear at the natural speed for the box you are using. Any attempt to do a quicker gear change will either result in a crunch, which will start to damage the cogs.
Or ( silently) wear the gearbox synchromesh cones prematurely, the end result will then be a crunching as they fail work.

Only time I've had this is when the gearbox is cold, and doesn't want to shift quite as fast as I expect - so I pause for a moment before completing the shift, however my foot doesn't get the message and is already off the clutch... crunch!

i do that sometimes fine when the box is warm thou

i cant see why the prospect of letting a fiat garage take your gearbox out is frightening who ever said something like that before

i mean they've had enough practice on that engine and gearbox with the clutch problems in the punto 188s tbh it is the worlds easiest box to strip down as well and in theory there is a technition in every fiat garage who will likely go on fiat courses and have been trained to strip and service all fiat gearboxs

my dad is trained and he can have one of those boxs on the floor in 20 minutes then striped and rebuilt in another half hour and i have never seen him leave bolts of jobs he is extremly meticulous and it's rubing off on me too i just cant sleep at night if i find a washer left over on a job
