Hi I'm new to the forum just need some advice. I have a 2014 Panda Pop 1.2 with only 15,000 miles on the clock. 3 weeks ago the engine management light came on so I popped it in to local garage they diagnosed fault somewhere around Map Sensor but it seemed to be running ok when they turned light off so i took it away. 2 days later it came back on again but I also lost power at traffic lights and was only running at 10mph. so had to get it towed to garage. they put it back on machine, same fault, when they investigated further they rang me to say that all pipes/parts in that area were covered in gloopy yoghurt like oil? saying it might be due to city driving? they cleaned everything up and said if light came on he would change sensor. It was good for 2 weeks then light came back on. The garage changed the Map sensor yesterday. when I picked it up I said is light likely to come back on or car lose power to which he replied the light may come back on if the sytem didnt recognise the new part? but no to power loss and to bring it in so he could turn light off if it did. today was on way back from an 8 mile journey and light comes on at traffic light and loss of power, managed to turn engine off and get it going again. this happened twice. it was then ok for last 4 miles home but light stayed on. does this all sound right? should i be losing power? Dont really want to take it anywhere else as its cost over£300 as it is. Any advice welcome

Hi,

Welcome.

You cars engine has a lot of condensation in it from many short journeys where it did not get fully up to normal operating temperature for long enough.

The condensation mixes with some of the engine oil forming the mayonnaise like gunge . That could be causing a problem with the sensor.

£300 sounds like a lot for changing the map sensor but I don't know what else the garage did. Is it a fiat garage or a small independent?

Roughly where in UK are you?

How long have you owned it?
Was it serviced before you got it? After you got it?

thanks for replying £300:- £40 diagnostic first visit. £140 2hrs labour for the clean £95 for the map and £40 for towing which is prob ok if it was working ok but concerned about it still losing power. Had the vehicle from new so its got a full service history and no other problems

The car should not be losing power, and the engine light should not be coming on.

Whatever the fault was, it's still there.

I think you should take it back to the garage that has done the work, tell them that they haven't fixed the fault they charged you for fixing, and that you now want them to either fix it properly at their own expense, or refund what you have paid them.

If they refuse, I'd make a complaint about the garage to trading standards.

Hi thanks for advice have taken car back today. still diagnosing fault in MAP area but has said the gunky oil has come back and he wants to keep it a couple of days look inside rocker to check if there is a gauze/ gasket that is stopping the oil from going through breather properly and gunking up. does that sound right? he also said he will need to clean all oil away again.. not charging me for that.. also said that he has to clean new map sensor up as that is oily. do you think I didnt need a new sensor? trouble is he keeps saying fault says its in that area and not a specific place, does that sound right? because that would mean it's a process of elimination with all the parts in that area till they get it right? He did hint he would have to charge me for work inside rocker. sorry my knowledge of cars is next to none.

Hi :)

Two hours of Labour charged already and NOW they want to check the commonest route of the 'mayo'

They are either clueless.. or ripping you off

This time of year is the worst for building moisture within the engine

If you get it cleaned out properly you should NOT see it return this summer

Do you want a recommendation of a garage near to you?

Update.. I have picked car up from garage today after them having it 2 days. they have had everything out of car down to the block and cleaned it all.. no charge... he saying its faultless. we will see!! watch this space.

I wonder what they actually did ?
Any mention of them changing the oil ?
Good luck

No I'm pretty sure they haven't changed oil. he said oil in the oil compartment and under lid was not effected when I asked

Well... didnt last long... 2 days and 2 journeys after picking car up, engine light back on loss of power but just the light on after restarting engine. So managed to drive it it straight back to garage. spoke to mechanic. diagnostic still says Map sensor, loss of air in manifold?. they have now suggested taking it to local fiat dealer around corner and hopefully getting a more specific fault on their machine. as he seems at a loss to what to do.. they would pay for that... and hopefully go from there. Getting really fed up with it now.

prob went about 20-25 miles first trip and 15 the 2nd oil was on 4th square both journeys which i think is midway. the other lad who was there also said there are a couple of other sensors in that area too?

"Loss of air in manifold"

This is starting to sound like a problem that has been cropping up on the forum quite a bit recently.

Yes let garage pay for fiat to give them the full fault code , get code off them and post it on here.

They have charged you a lot so I'm glad to hear they are now doing the job they have already been paid for.

If it is the problem other people have had them it is fixable quite easily.

Well.. still carless.. Car went to main dealer tues for diagnostics £110 later ( which local garage is paying for) car needs 2 more parts Elec valve 71718105 and Vapour Trap 52105703 total cost to replace just over £500 :( Have decided after a chat with local garage to leave it with fiat dealer to do the work and they have said they are confident that this will fix problem but cannt guarantee it!.. Deja vue I think.. I asked them to order parts and as it stands at moment one part is in stock and the other could possibly be out of stock until mid April am still waiting to hear. NIGHTMARE... Just got phone call the part is out of stock at fiat so they wont be able to get one before 9th April :(

Thats really disappointing isnt it.. :(
Are they not offering a loan car..? they are earning good money from you

That explains the loss of air into manifold.
Others have found the cause to be the evap canister valve.
The fiat dealer sounds to be on the correct track- good.

Sounds like your garage is not confident any more.

The part can be very expensive if bought from fiat dealer.

They havent actually said which part is unavailable but the prices they have given me is £278.39 for valve and £56.70 for trap and the local garage did say if they were to do the work they would buy fiat parts. so didnt think they would be much cheaper. I did see the genuine valve on Ebay for £266 and I just want the work done now. thinking of trading in for a kia picanto but want to get the work done first because they knock price done for engine light being on. I did enquire with desira trading in for a new Panda but they wanted to take the £500 of my car bringing the trade in price to about £2100 where as kia are saying £2900 with the work done. dont know what they are like to drive but reviews are good and the warranty is 7 years and no no mention of a loan car

Typically mean of the dealer to knock the full cost of repair (parts and labour) off the trade-in offer. For a very low-mileage example like yours, £2100 is taking the p*ss IMHO.

Can't comment on the Kia, other than to say that a chum of mine who has one says, somewhat ruefully, that you pay dearly for the 7 year warranty due to their servicing charges. No idea if that's a fair comment.
