Hi,
In some cold weather, we had a small amount of ice. As I was starting off I could feel the wheels spin so backed off but a I saw a warning light on my dash, which disappeared before I could read it. Any ideas what it might be?

All new cars from a certain date must now have ASR. I'm always puzzled at the benefit of the warning lamp though. As you said, you only got a glimpse, as during any slippage, your attention is on where the car is going, not the instrument display.
Hopefully no-one is ever looking at the display when the ASR is needed.
It would make more sense if the warning had a delay, so it stayed on for a couple of seconds after all was calm, so the driver then was told what had occured.

Very likely the light actually says ESC - Electronic Stability Control, of which Anti Slip Regulation (ASR) is part... here's pages 44 and 59 of the owner handbook that explain

A slight digression. Brake hard on snow, and the ABS system sounds like a machine gun.
(Practised with learners, on a snowy car park, from 15-20mph. Takes a lot longer to stop than gentle braking)

ABS also massively increased stopping distances in the snow vs locking wheels. Used to like being able to use MES to correctly disable the ABS on my Stilo so I could stop in a more controlled manner in snow if needed.

If the snow is not yet squashed, locked wheels will act like a plough, gently increasing the wall it is pushing against. Can sometimes make moving away again difficult. But we've all seen the answer to that, spin the wheels until the snow melts.

Actually, I think it was ESC, from the very brief glimpse I had.
Still, thanks for everyone's comments, I keep learning more about my Brill panda!
