I'm poised to change the horn on the Panda for something a little more 'Italian sounding' (Stebel Nautilus).

I note that FIAT have a 'moulded plug' that goes onto the existing horn rather than bog-standard old-fashioned spade-connectors.

I'm very reluctant to cut that plug off.

So my question is, can I get a matching socket that the existing plug will fit onto?

I could then fit the desired wires with spade connectors into the new socket.

Plug the two together and voila! I have two wires with spade connectors trailing from the connected plug and socket, if that makes sense?

If such a socket exists, can anyone direct me to a part number please?

It's probably not readily available off the shelf, or certainly not as an individual item (you'd probably have to buy a quanitity (50+?) of them, if they exist).
Why not cut the plug off far enough back that you can put spade connectors on the tails of it too, that way it can be easily reconnected.

Hi
When i changed my horn to Flamm air horns i just plugged in male spade terminals into the plug that went on the original horn
I needed to piggy back a relay into this circuit as the compressor draws more current
The air horns sound great proper Italian sports car sound
The compressor and snail horns are all one unit so no mucking about

Personally Max I would wire a different system all together. When I had my daily driver van, I changed the crappy sounding horn to a double disc very loud system with separate switch. A good wee project. The slight difficulty I had was where to place the new horns, I managed to put them on a single flat frame bolted to drivers side, they looked like they were floating. They were really loud. :D

Thanks guys

I've had a horrendously tiring day and up again at stupid-o-clock in the morning again.
But I'm going to have a proper look at all these options in due course - and there are some good thoughts there.

A BIG "Thank you" everyone!

Jim. I've wired these horns in before - I want to keep the horn operating as original but simply didnt want to cut the plug off (that way the car can be returned to standard spec - no reason for this particularly other than some other owner in the future may want it that way). I just don't feel it neccesary to wire in a whole new system, but appreciate your opinion

I'm very reluctant to cut that plug off.

Isn't it a standard Superseal 2pin plug, same as the 169 Panda?
If so, there are sellers who do the plugs, sockets and even pre-made cables on eBay.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283971680908

Already done on mine, fitted a pair of Fiaam electric horns, one under each headlamp.

Plug is a standard superseal, like the link above, so easy to create a cable from the original horn plug to a relay. Leave standard horn in place, can be reconnected in case of problems with the louder ones.

Thanks Bill.

I'm about to fly out the door to work so will look at sourcing a plug/socket later.

I was thinking of sharing the horn mount if there is space - or removing the original horn and hanging the loud one in same original mount (though may need to make a small secondary bracket up to get it pointing in right direction etc)
Otherwise maybe find a suitable location in front of the radiator - I'll find somewhere I'm sure.

Thanks again!

Evening all.

Managed ot purchase a handful of these Superseal jobs complete with time-saving wired-in tails; they should be here by Thursday, so if the weather is half decent I'll start looking for a suitable place to mount the Nautilus.
With luck these superseal plug/sockets will be a decent fit and all will be well.

I dont imagine it will be a big job with the battery adjacent to the horn - unlike my last car where I had to trail cable all around the engine bay

I'll report back when I get this done and whether I ran into any snags

If you have any spare connectors afterwards PM me I will gladly buy one or two for the same project,

Been away from the computer for a couple of days.

No space near original horn.
Some space behind bumper, but needs bumper removing to properly access.
There's a big space under each headlamp, accessible from underneath if I remember correctly, and lower headlamp mount gives a M6 bolt to use.
Don't think you'll find anywhere else.

Don't mount near to the engine ECU, the electromagnetic force given off when you parp the horns will upset the ECU. Many years ago I fitted a pair of Fiaams to a Seicento. Very tight at the front, so mounted them behind the wheelarch liner one side. (The other side was full of washer bottle.) Sadly they were close to the ECU, although the other side of the inner wing. Parp the horn, the engine management light came on. No effect on engine, and went off at each restart. They got disconnected, and reverted to the original. Car probably went to the scrpayard with them still there.

OK - here's an update...

I now have a very nice loud very "Italian sounding" horn on the car. Interestingly the standard horn that was removed is made by Fiamm and while it wasn't as puny as the one on my Suzuki Jimny, it just wasn't 'man enough' in my opinion and had to go.

I carried this job out yesterday, which given today's gales was in the nick of time!

Unfortunately the Superseal two-pin plugs are nothing like the original FIAT plug and I ended up having to cut the FIAT plug off the loom.

All the work was accessed from above, and/or through the removable panel in the left hand wheel-arch liner. I didn't jack the car up, but had the wheels turned to full left lock for access.

  1. Removed the original horn
  2. Offered up the replacement horn to try and establish how it would fit in and what it would attach to - I decided to mount it onto the original horn bracket, but needed a small 90 degree bracket so that the Nautilus would sit in an orientation that wouldn't allow it to chafe or rattle against anything.
  3. With the Nautilus now in place, it was a case of making up suitable length wires, crimping-on the spade fittings, and finding a location for the relay. I was going to utilise a point just in front and inboard of, the battery, but the plastic tab on the relay broke off. so I have 'stuffed it' into the criss-cross webs of a plastic moulding just above the radiator and held it in place with a tie-wrap.
  4. I utilised an existing earth-point on top of the chassis, just in front of and below the battery.

Horn works a treat and is ready to frighten little old ladies and small children

Apologies, paying more attention now, I see this is in teh 2012- section, and it appears that Fiat have used newer design plugs.

Too late now, but those are probably also available, but no point in doing the research now.

Good result.

A loud horn on a small car is fun, because when used, people look around for the source, usually ignoring you.

Heheh - that comment made I laarf :D:D

Yes, you're absolutely right!:D

As for the plug - my car is a 2014 so it could be that FIAT have messed around with the plug design but it does beggar the question why? (...Probably to stop erks like me changing the horn!)

Any idea what the current rating is on the original horn? Apparently the Stebel Nautilus draws 18A (hence the need for the extra relay); curious to know how much the original wiring can supply on its own

EDIT: just had a look at the manual; fuse for the original horn is 15A so guess that gives a maximum
