Hi there!

I purchased my first Panda (2013, twinair 4x4, 0.9 petrol engine, 62k on the clock) in July this year; over the last few days the 'injection system failure' warning light has popped up and remains on.

Also, when taking it on a long drive a few weeks back, once it had warmed up there was a knocking sound coming from the engine, especially in lower gears.

Any ideas on any of the above? I think I might need to get a fault reader? Can anyone provide any advice on what to get and where from?

Also looking for reliable independent garage who preferably specialise in Fiats in the B63 area.

Thanks in advance!

Rachel

Hi Rachel and welcome to FF :)

Was there great service history with the car?
What work have you seen in your ownership

62k shouldnt really be any great mileastone..
But 4x4 systems are pretty complex..as is the little engine (we have a TA each..)

Lets deal with the Warning 1st

Sounds like you just do local trips..?
Shouldnt be much of an issue (unlike a modern diesel) but will accelerate wear.

The light could mean almost anything

So we will try and point out regular stuff:

Does it now sound different.. a bit less 'purring'?

It only has 2 spark plugs.. they have a hard life.. and so are a regular service item.. thats not an uncommon niggle on here

Thankfully its a sparkplug.. so although @£30 each its a quick and simple thing

Oil in these motors is a big deal.. it helps control the fuel ratios through the engine.. faults here can get expensive :(

As you rightly say ..best bet is to read codes.. attempting to figure out what the car isnt happy with

Twinair is unusual tech Fiat.Alfa and Jaguar..

Most readers are built around VAG ( volkswagen) .. so error readings are often innacurate on our FIATs :(

Best kit for us tends to be MultiECUScan

We have our own kit its about £80..

Member Zeewulf is south of Brum

Your noise at idle.. could be a symptom of this lumpy engine..
Or flywheel.. something a bit loose-worn

Tell us more :)

varesecrazy thanks for the detailed response.

Full Fiat service history when I purchased in July this year - no work has been done under my ownership.

So far it hasn't had too much use at all - a couple of trips from Birmingham to Devon and a few local runs - but working from home has meant it has been on the drive for the most part.

I haven't noticed any difference in the general sound - but then I've had it such a short time I'm not sure I'd notice - and may not have sounded right when I got it.

WRT the knocking sound - there is a vibration too, it shudders - but it's intermittent, and I've only noticed it on the longer trips once it's warmed up.

The warning light went off again during a 1.5 hour trip so I think I'll invest in a fault reader and consider taking to the garage recommended if there are any other problems.

Thanks MaxHeadroom Al D and Zeewulf for your help!

BW,

Rach

Good luck with this, Rach

Do please come back to this thread and let us know what the outcome (if any) was, once you've had it checked over.

Hi all (@varesecrazy @MaxHeadroom),

I realise some time has passed since I posted! The warning light was increasingly intermittent so I held off taking it in.

Predictably, a couple of weeks ago I drove Birmingham - Devon, the warning light was back on from setting off and had significant loss of power in 5th/6th on the motorway - it pretty much got up to 70mph and that was it. The drive back on Wednesday was fine, business as usual, albeit with the warning lights still on.

I took it into Motormech on Friday, that morning the warning light did not come on, and unsurprisingly they weren't able to replicate the fault. They did however give me a list of fault codes:

P006862: Manifold pressure up throttle at key on - Signal compare failure
P010626: Intake manifold pressure sensor (Functional test) - signal rate of change below threshold
P003973: Dump valve functional test - actuator stuck closed
P023D26: Turbocharger pressure and manifold pressure plausibility - signal rate of change below threshold
P023514: Turbocharger pressure sensor - circuit short to ground or open

Can anyone make any sense of these?

I took it out again yesterday PM just for a few miles - had almost total loss of power, managed to get it to crawl in 1st to a layby, waited for a few minutes and tried again - and it seemed ok on the drive back. This morning the warning lights are still on but again no immediately obvious issues.

I have it booked in again Wednesday morning - just very concerned as I'm due to drive back to Devon this time next week - any help gratefully received!

Thank you!

Rach

Crikey..

Well they look vaguely related.. all to do with the air : fuel delivery

The last one ..short ..or ground

Thats saying the sensor isnt happy with its electrical connections

That acting up will fool the next error up

Checking the wiring connections would be top of my list ( could they clear those errors..)

Seeing in what order they reappear will also be helpful

Hi Rachel

Not sure if you've sorted this or not.

My son had same problems on his panda, we ended up having a new turbo, turbo pipe, Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor, and to my horror the previous owner had a small mod chip box on it, ended up that causing most or the problems.

When my injectors went which also caused a loss of power they were also causing a knocking noise as well, ones i had the injectors done the power was back and knocking noise gone, I just got my new panda just 2 weeks ago, they are awesome cars to drive have some good fun in them.

I have the software that fiat has for the workshop manual as well as fiat's own diagnostic software, can send you both software's if any good for you. x

Hi backyardbilly,

Sounds like we have had very similar problems! The garage is currently changing the pressure sensors and we'll see how things go thereafter - horrified at the idea of a new turbo as I only got this in July but it is what it is - like you say, I hope once this is sorted it'll be a decent little motor.

Will feed back when I know more!

Cheers,

Rach

Hope you get this sorted and it's nothing too expensive!! Keep us updated on what the issue is, could be something simple like a sensor giving an intermittent fault?
I have the Twinair 0.9 engine in my Panda 4x4 Antarctica and it really is a lovely little motor, very nimble and a ton of fun to drive. They are just very fussy about the correct grade oil and depend on the oil to operate the valve trickery in the engine to keep it running efficiently. So regular oil changes are a must and check the level on the dipstick, which is not the easiest task on these!
Mines covered 41k miles now, runs sweet and not had any issues!!!
