Er Indoors called me today about a big water leak. No heater (FFS its 37 in Spain) and warning lights up on the dash but she got it home.....
Poured in water and it came out immediately.
She Whatsapp videod me, showing me a hose with a plastic section clamped in the end. Diagnosed as a heater pipe. Broken off the 'manifold' into the back of the engine.
It's either bodge it to get it to the repair shop (I'm not home for another 2 weeks) or call a recovery truck (inc. in the insurance).
With my guidance she is hands on.
Find a cork, pare it down to tap into the manifold, fold over the heater pipe and cable tie.
Filled her up, no leak, leave the rad cap on by only one thread and take it into the garage monday.
It will be a week in there by the time they get the plastic manifold.
I suspect the heater hose over time weakened the plastic because it needed additional support.

But it didn't stop there:
Er Indoors noted a strange starter noise on start up. Starter screech?
She went back into the workshop for someone to listen to it. Fitter diagnosed starter Bendix clutch. Thought it must have got soaked with the water leak. He offered that once the engine was hot, any moisture would have evaporated and the noise will go.....if not it will need a bendix.
Hmmm, suspicious me but run with it.
Sure enough, the next day, starter was devoid of noise.
In the meantime I sought a replacement.
Starter from low mileage car, delivered £26.
I'll keep it spare.

Hi.
Actually quite possible. These are pre-engaged motors so the solenoid pulls in the gear to the flywheel first then the last little bit on the solenoid and the power connects to the motor. Any slight rusting on the motor shaft and the gear won't properly engage, its spring loaded so the contact can be made and the result is the screech. Should be fine now.
