Morning all

Since new, my TA Cross has made a strange grinding noise when pulling away in 1st, or reversing slowly, or changing down from 3rd to 2nd when the engine isn’t properly warmed up. Seems to be when the clutch is engaging (biting point). Once the engine has warmed up it stops. My dealer told me it is the flywheel with surface rust on it and will bed in after 1000 miles or so. About 1700 miles now and still doing it. Interestingly, I was parked next to an older TA Lounge a few weeks ago and I could hear it making exactly the same noise, presumably with more miles on it than mine. Hopefully my description will sound familiar to someone - is this normal?

TIA

My 4x4 TA, 13-reg, 80,000+ miles - has been making that worrying noise for years - have stopped thinking about it.

Thanks for that - kind of confirms my thoughts. Just wish the technician had told me that rather than give false hope. Much prefer to have my expectations managed.

My TA 4x4 2018 has never made such a noise. I think I would be a bit concerned if it did, but I am the eternal pessimist

Yes indeed.

There are horror stories of damaged gearboxes.. in newly acquired cars

But I'm of the 'if it aint broke..' school

Happy to live with 'character'..
But can generally spot issues and address them before bills mount.

My previous 4x4 TA made a similar noise at clutch biting point changing down from 3rd to 2nd. But not pulling away.
It didn't sound desperately bad, but I was conscious of it, and would be careful changing down. I asked a technician to check it out at the first service, and he couldn't trace anything.

But a couple of thousand miles after the service it disappeared. I had no mechanical trouble with the 4x4 into the mid-30K miles. The only problem was the faux leather drivers seat wear.

It was replaced with a TA Cross - no similar noise on this one.
