Hello all. Hope someone can help me.

My wifes 2013 Multijet 4x4 was very lumpy indeed on start up yesterday and has thrown an engine light and gone into limp mode. I got my code reader on it and its P0488. Local garage has said that their reader says its a stuck Throttle body but it has cleared itself now and they have reset the code. Anyone have any thoughts on this? The car has been a bit lumpy on start up and a bit noisy for a while.

Could it be the EGR Valve causing this? If so, where are they located and are they easy enough to change?

Many thanks

P0488 is due to the engines ECU detecting a problem between the position of the Throttle (Via the Throttle Position Sensor) and EGR valve.

Basically, the TPS (and some other sensors) sends signals to the ECU that then work out how much the EGR should open.

If the TPS and EGR don't relate you get P0488 code..

I would suspect the EGR is clogged up and failing to open, but you/someone with a scantool could quickly log the TPS to see if it's signal is correct before condemning the EGR.

Also, it worth a quick checking over the intake and exhaust hoses and pipes for leaks.

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated. The garage said that he can see the throttle body sticking?? I guess some cleaner around that would be a good idea in that case.

If i disconnect the MAF Sensor, will that bypass the EGR etc and the car will run on a default map?

Had sticking throttle on our Seat. £793 for a new one! My local man removed it and cleaned it for £35 and its just starting to play up again after about 5 years. He said to be careful to be gentle and use soft lint free cloth to avoid damaging coating on the throttle body. I now don't believe the initial fault diagnosis as so many faults on various cars have proved to be something else when detailed investigation has been completed. You may be lucky though.

If using EGR cleaner. Beware. Very short bursts of spray into the air stream and wait for it to clear. The engine note will dip and then recover.

A big burst can do a lot of damage by pre-detonation stopping the engine dead!!

After sorting my Bravo of this issue, I used Wynns diesel cleaner regularly and never had a repeat in over 60,000 miles.
