Towing with a Panda

I'm trying to find the maximum towing weight for my 2018 Panda Pop. This should be noted in the registration document under O.1 and O.2 in the 'Vehicle details' section but both of mine are blank. Has anyone else found this, or should I contact DVLA? Thanks in advance.

Re: Towing with a Panda

Look in the owners handbook - it’s in there
400kg unbraked or 800kg braked. (Diesel versions 900kg braked)

Re: Towing with a Panda

Thanks, HH. For some reason, my handbook reads " IMPORTANT A trailer cannot be towed so there are no provisions for fitting a tow hook" (Page 157 in my handbook.) 'Indespension' fitted a tow hook to my last model (2010) Panda and I towed a trailer with no problems for the 8 years I owned it - though, thinking back, I didnt check either the log book or the hand book to see if this was okay!

That's correct for the 1.2, it's in my handbook too.
All I know is that one acquaintance burned out a clutch trying to do a hill start with a small two berth caravan. Not enough low speed torque I believe.

that line about not being permitted only applies to Pandas with an LPG fuel tank (that goes in place of the spare wheel). Is yours LPG? (Note - the bold text at bottom of page only refers to where three *** appear, in the column headed LPG. Pencil points at value for petrol-fuelled 1.2 engine)

Interestingly, the diesel 4x4 (so much more low end torque) was voted Small Tow Car of the Year by a caravan I gotta magazine around 2014.

Re: Towing with a Panda

I tow with a twin air 4x4. Due to parking caravan on a site under the Whaley Bridge reservoir a few weeks back and the demise of my Bravo a few days before, let alone the fact the river Goyt had bust its banks turning the site into a lake, I had to get the van moved. In fear and trepidation I pulled it out of the floods, up a steep ramp onto the road with no fuss or drama. It then towed the caravan 25 miles to a site on safe ground and made a fine job of it holding 50mph on the motorway, rock solid all the way must have been considerably more weight than it should handle, I arrived at the new site which was safe and free of overflowing rivers, but still very very wet and muddy. Again then car pulled and pushed the van with ease.

I hope never to need to pull such a weight again, but can confirm its a pretty solid tow car.

Re: Towing with a Panda

Thanks again, HH. I think we must have differing handbooks as mine shows the three asterix applying to the 1.2 8v 70HP, the 1.2 70HP LPG, and the 0.9 Twin Air. There's no bold text in my page either.

Re: Towing with a Panda

Interesting - this must be a recent development - my 0.9 TwinAir 4x4 (63-plate) is cleared to tow per Herts Hillhopper’s limits of 400kg/800kg unbraked/braked.
I can’t imagine a situation where I’d go beyond my 400kg unbraked trailer, but I can well imagine that it would acquit itself in the scenario described by The Panda Nut - keeping the speed down and using that low-1st gear should allow for that in the emergency described. If you look at the raw engine stats, we towed with weaker, lighter cars historically, right? My main worry would be wear on the DMF, if doing so more regularly. In a pinch, though, you’d do it.
It’s a shame if they have deleted the option to tow, as it adds to the Panda’s versatility massively..

Re: Towing with a Panda

The whole 2018 owners manual is here to download.
https://carmanuals2.com/get/fiat-pan...-manual-111736

HH's picture is correct, the 1.2 LPG isn't approved for towing as the towbar replaces the type approved crash bar behind the bumper which is meant to (help) protect the LPG tank in a rear ender.

The normal 1.2 is ok, 800kg braked, 400kg unbraked and 60kg max nose weight.

Re: Towing with a Panda

Thanks Goudrons. The mystery grows! I've downloaded the manual from your link, and it's quite different from my handbook. It gives the Weights on page 166, mine are on page 157, and unlike the download manual which you and HH have, quite clearly says a trailer cannot be towed. It would seem that Fiat have changed their information for some reason. I'd just go along with the weights that you've quoted except that the fact that tow weights aren't given in my logbook too would seem to suggest I wouldn't be insured to tow a trailer.

Yep that page 157 is identical to the one in my Cross 4x4 2019 manual (my manual is dated 4/2019 3rd edition). So I suspect that there has been at least one update of the manual.

Looks like they made a mistake when translating the English version of the manual - I suspect only the columns marked LPG and Natural power should have the asterisks in them (and yes, the versions you have are newer/more recent than my edition - suspect some small details altered when the WLTP testing programme affected the MPG etc)

Re: Towing with a Panda

The only way to see the max tow weight is to look at the vin plate (on boot floor) that fiat has stamped the cars weights onto, this is the only way to tell the legal weight, don't go on the handbook or even the cars log book, if you have a bump or are stopped by the police etc they will only look at FIATS plated maximum on YOUR car. So there will be 4 sets of weights stamped onto the plate, first number is maximum car weight, 2nd number is maximum train weight, ie, car plus trailer, last 2 are max axle weights, (if there's only 3 sets then you cannot tow anything with this car, and your insurance will be invalid), so all you need to do subtract the first number from the second and you have the maximum tow weight for YOUR car. Hope this helps, and only go on the VIN PLATE.
