Hi

We have a 2015 Fiat Panda Pop 1.2, and there is no evidence of the timing belt ever being changed (current mileage is 34000), so for piece of mind I plan to do this soon. I am a competent DIY mechanic, and have done several timing belt changes on other vehicles in recent years.

I did a search online for instructions, and came across a Youtube video (albeit in Dutch), which demonstrates this on a Ford Ka.

Is the engine in my Panda (2015) the same as the Ford Ka shown in the video ?

Any other links to instructions for changing the timing belt on my Panda ?

Regards

Simon

It's Fiat's venerable FIRE engine so the same as umpteen Fiat models (but not the Ka). I'd say certainly check the water pump but I'd be inclined to change it anyway.

Panda 12 onwards/Ford Ka 08 onwards/ Fiat 500 07 onwards have the same the engine!

These newer interference engines must be timed up correctly otherwise damage may occur.

The older Fire engines Euro 3/4 have markings on the engine block and head to assist with timing the engine - not a great method I have to say.

Newer Euro 5/6 variants have different tensioners that are easier set the correct belt tension and require timing tools to as not to get it wrong. These tools cost between £40 onwards depending on brands.

As for the water pump, as a rule of thumb, every-time you change a belt you should change the pump. It’s a false economy otherwise, as these water pumps are not necessarily know for their longevity. I’ve had a few leak all around the 72k interval.

Choose reputable brands. Some may even come with a gasket (Meyle) so you don’t have to faff around with silicone.

It’s most certainly a DIY job but make sure you have the right tools and best parts so the job is done properly first time

I don't wish to be rude, but I am just checking you are certain of your replies as there seems to be conflicting answers. Can you please confirm. Babboo_umbro says it's not the same as a Ford Ka, yet AAB1992 says it is the same.

Same engine, at least until the new 2016 KA and maybe that too...

The 'Ford' Ka (pre 2016) was built by Fiat and uses Fiat engines. The post 2016 Ford Ka is made in India (for the Europe-bound models) and Brazil (for the South American market).

As an aside: Interestingly, my Panda has some small parts marked 'Ford' under its bonnet.
