So, a month and 5,500km in a brand-new Cross 4x4 and three of the four rims are bent, one of them irreparably. No punctures, but a great deal of mud in that cyclone that hit Zimbabwe & Mozambique. The rims are wearing Pirelli Scorpions - 185/65 R15s. That's the only AT tire I can find here -- and I can't find after-market rims that might be less inclined to bend. Can they be strengthened? Importing them will be a mission. Any suggestions gratefully received!

I'd say lesson learned. Buy some steel rims for practicality. Much cheaper. You may even be able to get some used ones (FIAT Panda/500 or older Punto etc) that would work.
Alloy wheels are lighter - and therefore softer - than steel wheels. If strength is your primary concern I'd have a look for any 4x98 14" steel rim as they'll be much less likely to distort and, if they ever do, are a lot easier to repair.
