I get a lot of derision from certain creatures on here, but I do feel that these days, older cars still make a lot of sense.

And provided they don't get regulated off the road by swivel-eyed Gove acolytes, they'll probably still be going, long after the more recently-produced vehicles have been written off as an uneconomic repair, because their high-tech fixtures and fittings have gone completely awol.

And another thing... Why don't they add an element of how effective the lights on new cars are. My mums 208 had these 3D headlights, stunning looking.

But at night on main beam it's like a keyring LED light from Poundland to say the least...

She wants rid of it because she's apparently had some close calls due to barely being able to see the road at night!

That's bound to subtract from the cars safety and add to the likelihood of an accident.

Well CBC seems not to work so that's good. I hope I never find out if it does!

This new Panda goes like the wind. Its so quick I am happy to leave it in eco. Power or Audi Mode only to be used for tailgating. Can really get close now as CBC will save me when the Audi drivers stamp on the brakes....

So far I am happy. Yes it does have only 4 speakers on the radio, but this means I can fit some really good ones and not feel bad about chucking the standard fitments away....because there arn't any in the back.

Must remember not to bash into everyone else as its not got any stars.

It won't be towing anyone bragging about lane departure warnings out of any snow or mud either. They can stick their stars under their wheels and use them to get moving!

I had a really good look at the Ibeza before buying a Panda. Quite nice and just right for some I am sure.

Thanks for reminding me. Off to Halfords for bright bulbs in the morning.

There’s genuinely no way a VW Up or the Aygo could have a superior body structure to the Panda. Especially the Curry’s-car which predates the latest Panda.

Euro NCAP are failing the public by not going into more detail about body structure, forces, and differentiating it from safety equipment and having a general safety stance in each car category. A 5 star city car is NOT the same guarantee as a 5 star Range Rover.

It sickens me how they try to throw the Panda, number on car in its class in Europe, off with these silly and poorly positioned arguments.

I’d say the biggest issue with the Panda and all other small cars is how high it lifts off the ground on a crash. Every other city car is the same. Yet no comment on it.

What a waste of whoever funds it’s money.

If you drill down into the NCAP reports, they do differentiate between body structure and safety equipment. The Panda's poor performance is in part due to the vulnerability of the driver and front-seat passenger in a side impact - exacerbated by the Panda's narrowness, and its 5 door configuration. Next time you sit in yours, look how close your ear is to the seat-belt fixing, and think what a mess that would make of the side of your head in a side-impact. Just saying.

Honestly you're not coming out of a side-impact any worse in a Panda than any car, even the biggest, safest Volvo to date.

No, thats just plain wrong, Volvo, particularly has an amazing safety record in all areas of impact, in fact the company had recently announced that from 2025 nobody will die nor be seriously injured in a volvo in any real word collision.

And I believe them absolutely.

Watch the NCAP videos, the Volvo which was rated the best rated car to ever have passed the test. Still annihilates the side of the car to the point where that side barrier would have you destroyed completely.

I admire Volvo's commitment to safety and if anyone can do it, it's them. I really hope they achieve that goal too, but I'm less optimistic about the reality?

A 40 tonne lorry can make mince meat of anything we call a car. It's all relative.

Well said. Oh by the way you fund it! Euro Tax... Its quite clear that the npanda body holds up well in a crash and that the zero stars is near rubbish. If you buy a small car and get run over by a truck its going to hurt being in a so called 5* car aint going to make much difference. Nor will the VW badge....
ANyway my Panda has CBC so it should be 5*s anyway.

Side airbags?

Ve are sorry, its not German so the side air bags clearly will not work as they would in say a VW UP. Anyway Fiats are crap everyone know this.....

I think we should take this with a fairly large pinch of salt. I do not need to be told I am off line or that there is someone behind me if I take reasonable care.
The tests have done a good job, cars are safer and so it should be. You cannot make them totally safe even when driven by computers some common sense should be applied to the results.

I certainly don't want to pay for such things. I hope and trust these will be part of the MOT and failure of them should render the affected cars liable to immediate crushing.

If you have autonomous braking systems dont forget not to look into the laser closely to see if it works. Perhaps there shoud be EU regulations to fit huge guards onto these on case someone gets hurt.

May be we could get a man with a red flag to walk in front of each car to warn others of its presence and the dangers it presents. We could even regulate and have traffic police to enforce this!

By the looks of its design, the VW Up was already put into a metal crusher back at the factory... LOL I suppose it gets an exemplary 5 stars in that crashing it couldn't possibly make it any worse!

Im afraid I really have no time for VW after their cheating game. I had a 2008 Golf and I am certain that its turbo woes were directly related to experimentation on getting round the economy tests as the faults were all pretty much as defined in the papers exposing their actions. It cost me dearly, so I wouldn't buy another of their products. Our Seat predates all the messing around by some years and it will stay on until it dies. No doubting their cars drive nicely but they are not so much fun. My experience is that FCA products are not as well made or engineered overall, but they are at least as reliable over many miles. As they are an awful lot cheaper they do represent good value if you keep them for a long time.

Personally I would tax VW off the UK roads and have been campaigning for road tax refunds to those whose vehicles did not get a reduction based on false claims! Our government seemed to be so much in fear of the EU however that I met a wall of silence! I hope VW go bust.

That could all change in the next few years, as there’ll be no more need to fear the EU or any of the company’s it’s in bed with!

I am one who nearly voted leave nut believe in trade terms its not a good idea.

Have we forgotten how to do the famous British V sign.... Its what we do best. stand at the back pointing out where the other Nations are getting it wrong. I am praying car parts don't get even more expensive once we leave, but hope that we do indeed stop fearing the EU and start acting with a bot more common sense in some of the extreme areas. Probably wont make any difference apart form costing more. Here's hoping.

Thought I'd get political as the Tory leadership contest is enthralling. PLEASE MAKE IT ALL GO AWAY. I HAVE LOST THE WILL TO LIVE LET ALONE CARE.

Trump for Queen! I would love to have been a fly on the wall at Buckingham Palace when he finally left the building.
