I currently have Continental 175/65 R15 84 T Winter M+S 3 tyres.

Which I believe were the original tyres on my Panda 4x4 on a 15 plate.

Continental no longer produce these tyres. Not a problem but all the Nationwide tyre companies do not stock anything other than summer tyres in this size.

Does anyone have any ideas for a good winter tyre?

Thanks
Laurence

As mentioned in another thread you can get Uniroyals in this size as Winters (MS+77). They are parent company of Continental. Same economy, wet braking and decibel levels. Not token gesture as been out years just not in the relevant size. Mytyres only site I know of that supply winter tyres all year round.

Do you need full-on winter tyres, or will an all-season tyre do? If so, the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons and Michelin CrossClimate are well worth a look.

I have the Goodyears on my Cross. They were brilliant in deep snow earlier this year, and they cope admirably with my muddy farm-track, but they are also fine in the summer (they wear impressively slowly too).

I think there is a continental for sale on eBay at the moment if you just need one new one.

Take a look at this thread (found using the 'search this forum' link on the forum's home page)

I don't think the Michelin CrossClimate is available in the 175/65 R15 size of the 4x4... but other alternatives mentioned there, and a note that Continental have their own new all season tyre, although its not clear if this can be had in the 175/65R15 size or not. Their won website says its not, but Halfords Tyre Centre (as an example) says it is: https://www.halfordsautocentres.com/tyres/continental/allseasoncontact/175-65-r15-84h

Mytyres still have stock of Continental Cross Winters, keep ordering from somewhere after run out. Very expensive (£96 exc fitting). But they last.

I bought the cross climates for my twinair 4x4 about a month ago so definitely available. They are fine but I will be interested in how well they wear. The original winters did over 36K miles and I think I’d have managed over 40 on the rears but wanted to change all four at the same time and also the alignment was out as I was getting some inner edge wear on one of the fronts. I can’t say they are as amazing people make out in reviews and if they only last 20-25K at best I’d have wished I’d just gone for the old stock originals from mytyres.

I bought a pair of CrossClimates about 4 months ago and I can’t say I’m impressed. They don’t seem to have a confident grip around corners in the dry.

The Goodyears are also available in the slightly smaller section for the 4x4 - I have them on mine and they are just a bit better than the original Conties in every respect, especially dry road braking. 60 quid each from Oponeo in January 2017, done 18000 miles since with negligible wear.

That's interesting to hear. The reviews (and the manufacturer) give the impression that they are, in effect, as good as summer tyres, but are also good in winter conditions.

As the saying goes, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Depends on which conditions you want to bias them, had CrossClimates on the Subaru and didn’t really cut it especially in snow, the Nokian Weatherproofs on the other hand are much better in snow and acceptable in all other conditions on the Panda.
You can expect them needing replacing sooner though, that’s inevitable.

I have Nokian Weatherproofs on my 4x4 and they are also indeed excellent in all conditions. Whilst I happily swap an S2000 and SLK55 onto their respective winter wheels/tyres in November, the Panda 4x4 is perfectly able to make best use of the convenience of All-Season tyres and that's what it should run in my view.

Just ordered some Goodyear Ultragrip 9's. Can't complain about mileage on existing Continental ones (34,500 miles). Having all 4 as only a mm in it and cheaper than having issues with the diff later on. Bring on the snow, assuming we get any.
