Hi all..i have been watching some top side oil changes with a extraction device a Pella 6000 on you tube..As the oil filter is top side as well (plastic housing on TA models).Looks easy to do as you dont have to jack up the car and take off under tray and fight with the sump nut.
So what does every one think...

Well there are two schools on this and some people are pretty entrenched.
Personally I don't think vacuum extraction is as good at removing heavy particulate matter from the bottom of the sump. Additionally on some cars it is not possible to reach the bottom through the dipstick tube.
I'm against.

Against here too I'm afraid.
I realise mine is a 1.2 and I have to go "in below" anyway to do the filter but I did an oil change last week after just under 1000miles from an "alleged" service by a Fiat dealer only to find that sludgy stuff in my drain bowl, I just wonder if the vacuum pumps could pull it up?

Hi mate,,idont no i was just flicking through the videos so.. so say good some bad.. i agree if both under neith then no point doing a top side change.I was thinking if some one had motobility issues..

Well I've heart problems even after a double bypass last year and a bad knee that is on hold till the cardiologist gives the ok for an operation. I take my time with car jobs and normally can do them ok.

I bought an extraction pump from Aldi or Lidl for about £13 a while ago but have not tried it yet. Personally I would want to drain the engine with the pump, and then remove the sump and see if anything came out to be sure all the oil was removed before trusting this method. Its used by many garages and my smart car in fact had no sump plug so this was the only choice!

I had a smart fortwo before my panda. It was a 1litre mitibushi engine with sump plug ,great car but i dont not like the MHD stop start on it as the MHD belt could throw it self off,. A smart design fault (off topic)

My opinion is it is better to drain oil from the drain plug.
It also gives anyone who cares about what they are doing to keep their eyes open while under car and check other items / deal with problems early.
If for any reason it's topside oil change or no oil change, do it topside.
