Took the Twinair Trekking to my local dealer today for it's 1st year check and inspect service plus an oil and filter change as well (nearly covered 6000miles).

Noticed on the job sheet that Shell Helix HX7 ECT 5w40 oil was used. I asked the guy at the service desk if that's what I should use to top up and he confirmed that it was. I had a hunch that I'd already researced this and checked the handbook again and I'm pretty sure my 2016 model should be using 0w30 oil.

Should I query it with the dealer?

Yep should be selenia digitek 0w30, more moronic dealers unfortunately, insist they change it and ask to see the empty cans, or even better provide yourself and ask for a refund, oh and make sure they change the filter again too!

Thanks for the quick reply.

Will it do any harm? I understand that the Twinair used to use 5w40? How quickly should I get the oil replaced? I've got an appointment to go back to the dealer for some warranty work in about 3 weeks time. Is that too long to wait?

Later euro 6 cars take 0w, it shouldn't cause any harm short term but I'd be saying to them now so they don't try to wriggle out when you bring it back. My car got a dose of 5w inadvertently and it wasn't to keen on it - ran a bit rough at tickover, always best to use the correct spec oil particularly in multi air engines

The issue with thicker 5W40 oil only really manifests itself in winter when the temps are much lower and the oil that much thicker. Cold thick oil has an impact on the wear rate of the MultiAir unit that controls the inlet valves, so Fiat issued a retrospective change across all TA engines to use the 0W30 for safety's sake.

EU6 versions were already specified with the 0W30 as it has a minor (helpful) impact on carbons and economy, but the overriding requirement now is for safe workings in cold winter and that's where I notice mine most - the thinner stuff is definitely better for a cold start in -5C, without doubt.

So 5W40 at this time of year is no real life-changer, but the principle of the dealer being typically hopeless (as is nearly always the way with Fiat these days, sadly....) and needing to feel some of your heat  makes it worth kicking up a stink in my view!

Also just noticed that Shell Helix HX7 ECT 5W-40 is Semi-Synthetic (which Shell recommends for the Euro6 Twinair and Fiat use) but the Selenia Digitek P.E. 0w-30 is Fully Synthetic...

Anyhow, went back to the dealership after also double checking with Fiat on Twitter and they can confirm that the correct oil 0w-30, was indeed used. It was blamed as an error in the parts department but the mechanics already knew which oil to use.

Thats both parts and service whove told you wrong..

Id go elsewhere...

Better luck with the warranty work.

Well how surprised was I to get a call from Fiat Italy yesterday to check if I still had a problem? I told them that it had now been resolved and so they closed the case.

Information from my local Fiat dealer may be a bit iffy but they do seem very friendly and helpful. The only real downside is their sky high prices.

Quite impressed by the call from Fiat Italy though. Don't know where they got my number from...
