Squeal only lasts a few seconds. I think I've narrowed it down to the aircon pump clutch. It occurs whether or not the aircon is switched on, which I'm guessing is because the aircon pump is given a brief spin by the control system anyway to keep the sytem oiled. The pump does turn OK because I can turn the inner part of its pulley by hand.

Thing is, I thought I'd take off the auxiliary belt for further investigation. How the heck does one take the belt off without taking the engine out? Does anyone know if this is even possible? I'm an experienced mechanic but I've never seen an engine with such tight space around it, whether from top or from under.
