Twinair Software Upgrade

Hi.

First post so be patient.....

Have a Panda Cross Twinair which has routinely given a brim to brim (at least 280 miles) fuel consumption of 42 mpg or better....very standard journeys.
Recently in to check sooty exhaust. No issues apparently. However, I was told a 'software upgrade' had been effected, this to be applies to cars as they came in, not a recall issue.
Since then, ignoring the fill after the garage wor, 39 mpg and 38 mpg....

I called and they said the upgrade was to fix a cold-start problem (?)

Anyone else?

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

The only issue we've experienced with the TwinAir fuelling-wise has been an overly rich cold start..... If this is the problem they are seeking to fix, you'd expect it to use LESS, rather than MORE fuel?

More likely is that your economy has dropped due to the cold weather - we're getting less over the last few weeks, as temperatures have taken a plummet.....

Keep an eye on it and see what happens as the weather warms up.

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

There's probably some truth with what you've been told. A sooty exhaust suggests too much fuel maybe? It was probably the Euro 6 upgrade, which may effect economy. Hasn't affected my 2013 4x4, it has started better since, little quieter and I had different oil put in. Having said all that, don't forget our fuel is BS (British Standard). Is European fuel higher sulphur, I'm just speculating, as everyone probably gathers. At least your dealer appears to know what they're doing. Engine great and car very reliable. I wouldn't worry :-)

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

My September 2012 Panda 85 TwinAir was in for service Augustus this year and got also a software upgrade from the factory in Italy.
The minute they hooked it on the service computer the software upgrade message came through from Fiat Italia.

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

Hello and welcome .

That difference is well within normal variability, particularly given the recent cold snap.

You might want to read what I posted recently in a similar thread.

Personally I'd give it a few tankfuls to settle down (there's some warmer weather on the way), but if there is a noticeable long term difference, please keep us informed.

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

Asked in late October by fiat (letter from head office - uk) to take my fiat 500 lounge twin air to a main dealer for a software fix regarding cold start.

No problems since update and no apparent change in fuel consumption.

Milage now 9850 and engine running as sweet as can be...

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

Mine will get its software update when it has its 18k service in a few weeks' time. I'll be watching the fuel consumption like a hawk after that. It's already disappointing (40.3 mpg over the first 17k miles) and if it gets any worse, I'll start thinking about chopping it in.

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

The first 20.000/30.000 the TwinAir engine has te loosen up first, after that it's smooth sailing.

Can't help noticing that the loosening-up distance for the TA seems to have increased from 10k to 20k, and now 30k. I just can't keep up! At this rate, mine will have reached its optimum loosening-up mileage just before it shakes itself to bits and expires in a cloud of oily smoke.

The loosening up distance is slightly greater than the length of the warranty .

As is the point where it shakes itself to bits, presumably.

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

I'm only getting 37.2 from my Cross TA over its first 1300 miles. Did get a bit more to start, up to 38.9. Hopefully will improve over time.

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

I obviously have lead wellingtons, past couple of months my average (TA Cross) has been below 33 mpg. Currently 32.4. I don't give a stuff, this is a very short commute often in crawling traffic and I take every opportunity to annoy Audi drivers whenever I can Usually averaging mid forties when messing around in the Lakes or what have you.

Re: Twinair Software Upgrade

Had mine updated a little while back. No noticeable difference TBH.

34.7mpg is the indicated figure over the last 2000 miles.

My wife has no concept of how to drive a twinair so usually gets my 37mpg per tank average down to 33mpg or less. Basically, revs the nuts off it

Sounds very familiar! My wife can reduce my average mpg read-out by 10mpg just by a quick trip to the shops - but then I've spent many miles as a passenger in her horrible Volvo diseasel, trying to resist the temptation to say "Why don't you use 5th, or even 6th?"
