Hi, I seem to be suffering from the problem mentioned in this thread over in the "Panda" forum:

https://www.fiatforum.com/panda/340612-blocked-water-drains.html

After heavy rainfall I'm getting a wet foot as water pours into the drivers footwell as I corner!! However as I have the 2012 Twinair model the images in the linked thread aren't helping. Can anyone help me find the tubes that need unblocking! Seems like an easy fix so reluctant to take it into a dealer but I can't find them!

Thanks in advance.
Mark

Most simple is to remove your windscreen wipers, then remove the black cover, and then clean everything.
then put the cover back in place and mount the wipers back on. ;)
1/2 hour work, Problem solved. :D

Can you please expand on your answer? How does this stop the leak?

The Twinair has these two plastic "teats" in the bulkhead under the scuttle panel to drain the water out of the scuttle/heater inlet.

Rotting leaves and other debris block them up and then the only route the water has it out through heater.

They are in the same position on all models, but they are much harder to reach on the TA due to various parts of the engine blocking access.

Open the bonnet and look around the back of the engine on the bulkhead, close to the bottom ledge of the scuttle panel.

You can reach them, but you need to reach down, around and back up either side of the engine.

They will pull free from the scuttle to clean out as they are only hooked in to their holes with a rim on the seat of the "teats".

There ar two drain rubbers at the bottom that will constipate, and then the water will rise to a point that it comes into the foot well when you take a corner. ;)

Thanks, Many thanks
Water was coming in under very rain heavy conditions on a motorway, rather than corners.
Assume that water comes in the air vent and in my case onto left ankle/foot.
[Guess if I take this seriously off road better make a air intake cover/sealing plate.]

You can see the two drain rubber in the engine bay behind engine.
If fiddle around with them you can clear them as well, or push them upwards.
But you have to clean under the scuttle panel otherwise it will be matter of time before they constipate again.

It's very common on this and the previous Panda.

Rotting krap blocks up these drains, it's becomes even more common this time of year as all the leaves have fallen off the trees and it's raining as usual!

The heater inlet, like on most cars is in the top of the scuttle panel, though the actual port in the scuttle is a few inches higher than the bottom of it, so water doesn't flow directly into the heater.

Block up these drains and the panel will soon start to fill up with water, on the move and the water sloshes around and into the heater port and then out over the leg of your flares!

You need to plan on cleaning both these drains out at least twice a year.

If you're anywhere near water that deep your Panda will be more than waterlogged and a bit of water on your feet will be the least of your worries.

Search FF for the term 'duckbill'

I've posted plenty of info and pics over the years..:)

Take a look at this old post from the 2005 Panda forum - its gives a clue as to what you are looking for https://www.fiatforum.com/panda/272828-loose-plastic-thing-full-water.html?p=2784973

But, on the new Panda they are much harder to see or reach: one (the passenger side) is nearly visible behind a bit of heater pipe near the brake system, and the drivers' side one is nearly impossible to see or reach (on the MJ engined cars) behind the air filter case and diesel fuel lines.

Mine - I had cleared the passenger one when I got it - by squeezing it at described in the post above (six months old at the time but already blocked). Couple of weekends back I bit the bullet and reached the drivers side one - like this...

  • Open bonnet
  • Remove the black pull-off covers over the wiper arms (the right side of each over pulls towards you and then they slide out)
  • close bonnet and remove the nuts securing the wiper arms
  • Remove the wiper arms
  • Re-open bonnet and remove the black plastic trim/cover from base of windscreen - starting at driver side it just unclips and pulls away. You also need to remove various plastic 'button' fixings and other odd bits (like the two big foam sponge pieces by the bonnet hinges.
  • Once all way you can see into the 'void' that was covered - technically called the 'scuttle area', apparently.
  • My Panda is white, but there was a distinct black dirty 'tide line' in there, up to where the intake is to the heating fan (behind the wiper motor) - clearly in the first six months the drains had blocked and it all filled with water.
  • The passenger side drain was fine, but the drivers' one was solid black mud.
  • Cleaned everything out and put it all back together.
  • Time - about an hour
  • Then I thought... should have taken photos to put in here... Oh well, maybe next time :)
oh, and the cause of the build up of crud - leaves! So, during the autumn, regularly clear the leaves away from around the wipers and the intake vent by the passenger wiper. Get them here before they break up and go through that vent. And avoid parking under trees when the leaves are falling... then the problem is much less likely to occur.

This may not be a top entry ingress. If it's in the passenger footwell look under the n/s wheel arch and check the access cover to the back of the front bumper (where the spanner monkey's gain access to the horn/lights etc. They never click it in flush when they've finished allowing spray from the wheel to run through and then back over the arch liner where it then drips into the cockpit via wiring/pipe grommets. That's what happened to me after a 'free multi-point check'......annoying.

Anybody taken any pictures?
Parked under a tree and with the last three weeks of daily rain, driving in my wellies!

As it happens. took photos last week while taking mine apart to get leaves out. (My car was a pre-reg and sat 3 months at back of dealers. Quite a lot of crud seems to have accumulated while there as not all the type of leaves from the trees around me. Will post later. But there is (as @varesecrazy says) a separate thread that shows how to access without dismantling, which is the first route to try.https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-iii/475219-scuttle-drains-no-duckbills.html?p=4491909
