Hey all, in a bit of dilemma.

When my father passed away I was left his private reg. Now the retention is coming up to renewal and I'm unsure.

On one hand I do not want to dispose or sell it but on the other I don't know if I should assign it to the panda, my opinion slightly tainted by previous experience of people! I know some people have strong opinions about them but in truth I have no opinion either way or good or bad.

What would you guys do?

Have it valued, if it's expensive it would be a shame to lose just for the sake of assigning to your car. I'm in the same situation and will be putting on my panda pop soon.

Normally I wouldn't comment/give my opinion on the likes of this simply because it's a personal choice. The way I see it, you are still emotionally attached to the plate, but you've said you're not bothered whether you put it on your car or not.

For what's it's worth I'm really not a fan of personal plates for more than one reason, but that's a different story. Get it valued/sold & use the money for something you really need for your car, or if it's worth a significant amount of money...........well it's up to you.

I'm just thinking, a wee Panda with a private plate:chin: nah! There will be some who will disagree, but just my thoughts.

I am in the USA, so I'm hoping I'm reading your discussion right. You can SELL plates with personalization over there, is that right? I do not care for personalized plates myself, but if there's a fuzzy sentimental attachment, I would rethink.
Hope I'm understanding the conversation. If not,N please ignore my ignorance. Thank you !

You are reading this discussion correctly:) Here in the UK personal number plates can be sold. Some can go for stupid money. The most expensive lately sold from the DVLA costing over a million pounds...

I really don't want to hijack this thread, perhaps another story for another time.:)

We have a personal plate on our Panda and I don't see any problem, but it is £80 to retain it for ten years and that includes the reassignment to another vehicle and the change of MOT certificate. I did it all on line in one day, but beware when you do it on line the number is changed instantly so be ready with new plates and change of insurance. By the way some insurers reduce the premium because they see you care for your car.

I don't think anyone sees this as a problem, it's all down to personal choice.
The OP was asking peoples thoughts, & like any question asked on this forum you will have different views, pure & simple.

I think you'll find the retention is £80 for 1 year only. Just done one and that wastage oat.

Yes literally I was curious to what others would do. I will get it valued, but while I'm waiting and sorting instead of putting on retention, I may attach it to the car after all. As it costs me nothing apart from new plates and a few hours of my time seems to be a good option while I consider future plans

Just remember to inform your insurance company, they may change you an admin fee

I bought my missus a reg for chrimbo years ago, it's been on a few cars. It's on her Fiat Panda at the moment. As already said, around £80 to transfer to each car. Cheaper to have on the car than pay out to put it in a cupboard IMHO.

If its relevant to you then I say Do it Dood..

I would say assign it to the Panda, I recently had this dilemma albeit it wasn't an emotional attachment thing but more of a "will it look right on the car" thing (mad I know lol) I notice a lot of private plates are seen on prestigious type cars etc and this was where my dilemma came in because the Panda isnt exactly prestigious, well not in my opinion anyway, but in the end I thought the Panda is a quirky little item and its got its own personality so giving it a name just adds to the personality, there will always be haters in whatever you do or say in life so I say go with it :)

If you think it's right for you, I'd say that's more important than anyone's personal opinion.

I once had the chance to transfer a plate that had been in the family since 1930 and regret now not having done so.

Just a few practical thoughts:

1. The Panda is an anonymous car - one of the things I like about it, actually. Putting a private plate on it changes that; your car will be both more recognisable and more conspicuous.

2. It adds to the faff & cost every time you change your car.

3. Your insurer will likely charge you a fee to amend your policy details - in my case, it'd be almost half the annual premium .

4. It may make your car more of a target for mindless vandalism; a sad reflection on today's society but true nonetheless.

I can vouch for the fact that there are few cars quite as conspicuous as a yellow Panda Cross :D :slayer:

This is also my view.

I say keep it.

I have one which I put onto my wife's Caravelle. It's the only remaining part from my scrapped 15 years ago Morris 1000.
It's an original Cardiff issued plate (where I live) and both those points make it sentimental to me.

I will never sell it.
