I still can't quite believe that (a) someone on the design team came up with such a bonkers idea; (b) the rest of the design team liked it; and (c) it was tested and signed off for production!

It wouldn't be quite so bad if their merchandising bods had then designed and sold some cute or funky Panda-specific square cups ("squircle", to use the official name :yuck:) to fit the cupholders, but no, nothing, niente.

No evidence of joined-up thinking whatsoever :nutter:

What I don't understand is why folks think there's a problem with a square cup holder? A round cup of the right diameter happily fits. What's more a problem, on my newer 4x4at least so with the 'higher up centre console', is that the pair of cup holders nearest the gear lever are too near to the gear-lever, so a cup of any height can't stand up straight. There's good size holder in front of the (mouse style) handbrake, but you can only put things in there when the brake's on. And the ones behind the handbrake are too far back to reach sensibly. (Although the middle one of the three there is a perfect size to hold my bike-style water bottle, which I can reach while driving).
I don't drive with hot drinks to hand anyway - that bottle of water is a better bet. But if parked up, or returning to the car for a lunch break during conservation tasks etc, I end up balancing the cup from a flask of coffee on top of the dash... where no part of that seems to be flat!

I think your post amply demonstrates what the problem is with a square cup holder!

Edit: Ah, just seen that Seamaster got in first (and more succinctly than I managed!)

Sigh. One little screw and it had to go in the edge of one of the perfectly-good rears.

What did I do with my Panda today? I... Uh... Bought another one!

I last owned a Panda in 2017, and I've just picked up one in the exact same spec/colour as my last. This wasn't on purpose, but there aren't many on the roads here in Australia (and even less in presentable condition).

It's a 1-owner, 120,000km 2013 Pop with the 1.2 FIRE. Our Australian Pops are fairly well spec'd with A/C, Blue&Me etc. It's in quite good nic, and the only one I've come across where the headlights aren't faded to absolute buggery (which happens to most cars down under).

I'm glad to be back!

welcome back Tom - looks like a nice neat car. If that's your shed/garage behind it then I envy you!

Well "panda poo poo pop" ( those with a 4 year old will understand why they give things super names)

has had its first half decent wash ..... Due to that I decided immediately it needed claying ... So due to a more grown up life a dug out the good old clay mitt that Venters recommend years ago that's sat in a tupaware tub 20 minutes the car felt like glass. Those who remember me when I was much more active know I've got a fair detailing arsenal... Well weather and time was not on my side so straight on with the new autoglym ceramic spray on buff on stuff seems to do the trick ...

Today the first MOT. No worries as it's done only 7300 miles since new in 2018. Pass, obviously, and as the tester said "and no advisories" I should bloomin' well think not. In one sense, £40 for a statement of the bleedin' obvious. Ah well that's life
On the plus side (note my name) two mo'bike meets one on the Vincent on Sunday and one with the BMW on Wednesday, and two rallies booked for June and August. Seems almost normal but the bikes have got heavier after their long lay up, and my leathers a bit tighter. Odd phenomenon that!

Mrs J informed me early this morning she was intending to go to the bank sometime around 11.00 Hrs and I'd forgotten to check Becky's transmission oil level when I serviced her the other day. She's got a very small oil leak from her gear change seal (same as my boy's Punto had but not so bad) I've been keeping an eye on it and it's not really much of a leak so I've done nothing about it yet. It was a bit over a year ago when I last checked the level (last big service) and it had new oil when the clutch was done some 2 years ago now. The oil is still absolutely level with the bottom of the level plug hole so no additional oil needed. Doesn't take much oil to make a bit of a mess though does it?

While I was under there anyway I had a good look around the power unit generally for oil and water leaks (and anything else) and was pleased to note that the gearchange leak is the only thing of concern - now added to the "non urgent things to do sometime in the future" list. The new sump which was fitted about a year before I bought her, so it's probably about 5 years old now, is just starting to show very slight signs of the paint bubbling due to rust starting around the drain plug. Another thing to add to that list.

By now it was just after 10.00 hrs and I noticed that the garden rubbish bins, supposed to have been emptied yesterday, were still untouched. So I set to and dug up a large shrub which was supposed to be a prolific flowering delight but has persistently, for years now, only grown green leaves! Then I did a bit of weeding and hoeing in my borders and cut the grass, which just about filled the bin. Suddenly I realized Mrs J was still in the house because the Panda hadn't moved and it was now past midday. Thought you were going to the bank said I? Actually I'm not feeling too great she said. I'm just going to sit on the garden bench for a wee while. So I tidied up the gardening tools and went off for a shower. By the time I'd finished it was after 13.00 hrs and Mrs J was feeling much better so wanted to "do" the bank if I would drive.

I need no excuse to take Becky for a spin so off we went. Our bank is situated right in the middle of the chaos which is the new tram line being built through Leith docks so we did battle with the road works - that made sure her cooling fan got a good work out! and I "hovered around" in the trading estate whilst she negotiated the pedestrian restrictions to reach the bank. The good thing is that the bank is so difficult to access just now that there were no other customers and she got served very quickly - normally at least a half dozen people in front of you. I suppose they'll now say that as there are no customers they're going to close this branch as well? We've had to move branches 4 times in recent years due to closures!

Then we drove up the road to the new Aldi and did some essential shopping - stuff like crisps and chocolate bars ha ha and bread and milk - then took the long way round via Granton harbour just to get her nice and hot and give her a bit of a run after her service (which I did last week) and the rear brake work (done by Kenny's foreman a couple of days ago) so I could be happy with how she's running prior to her first decent run out of town next week when we'll be using her for the childminding run out into Midlothian. I'm pleased to say she's running beautifully and "feeling" magnificent. It's so nice to be driving a car which just feels "right"!

A wee PS to the above. I seem to remember someone talking about Petronas oil in one of the threads a wee while ago and mentioning that they thought their engine displayed rather longer cam follower "ticking" after having sat for some time when this oil was used. They'd noticed the difference when changing their oil for another brand.

Becky is the last of the "Family Fleet" to be now changed to running on Fuchs. I've not noticed any great difference with any of the other cars which have been running on a variety of product until I started getting them all moved over to the Fuchs over recent years but I've noticed that, since she got her fill of the Fuchs last week, she "ticks" for a lot shorter period of time when first started after standing overnight or longer. Of course this is all very unscientific and subjective - might just be the effect of changing old oil for new? - but I'd be interested if anyone else is using the Petronas and noticed anything?

More of a no oil in the system all bearings oil less noise Jock. Both 1.2's are the same. I shall be back to Mobil 1 next change and I shall use the petronas oil for my garden tools -all its fit for- Mobil 1 eliminates the clatter 100%. I just hope this Petronas stuff has not done permanent damage!
