Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

My 2015 4x4 is currently with Palmers of Watford for the squealing rear brake problem. They say they haven't heard of any re-call/upgrade for the rear brakes. I have just emailed them the forum thread so they can see the various comments and damper fix. Will let you all know how I get on. Incidentally it also had the dash battery warning light coming on randomly when driving at 50-60mph and a loss of power steering. They found a fault with the alternator and are replacing it, I have always had good service from them previously (on my third panda) so confident they will get it sorted.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

My 4x4 has gone in this morning and the problem has been confirmed by dealer who has ordered dampening kit, shame Fiat technical are insisting on turning it into a two day task.

Exactly the same here. Serviced yesterday, mentioned noisy brakes reversing, they checked with Fiat, Fiat approved the fix, they've ordered the damper kit and I'll need to go back next week.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Fiat Tech have now approved Palmers to replace the dampers....sounds to me like Fiat are keeping quiet about the fix unless you get a dealer to raise it with them......then all of a sudden they agree to do the fix! Thanks to all who have posted here all very helpful.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Does this happen with the FWD model or only the 4x4?

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

The chap who's dealing with me said it only seemed to be 4 wheel drive models (I suppose that could / would include the Cross). That might not be gospel though. Do all the 2wd models have rear disc brakes or drums (I don't know)? Could that account for a higher percentage of 4x4s?

Only the 4x4 models get rear disks, which is where the problem lies.

On the older model the 100HP also had rear disks and the squeal was hence sometimes on there.

I wish someone would post an image of this supposed damper part.........

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

If there's a part number or technical bulletin from Fiat that would also be great, as my local dealer had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned the damper kit, and said they'd check with Fiat but there didn't seem to be anything to do other than "inspect and realign" the rear brake pads, which does nothing to fix the underlying issue.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Just an update, my dealer phoned me this morning to say the damper kit had arrived but on opening the box the kit only contains parts for one side which has left them a bit perplexed. They have now ordered a second kit so they can do the other side tomorrow morning, seems like Fiat want to make process as difficult as possible. They also told me that they have had another 4x4 in this morning with the same problem so have ordered two kits for this vehicle as well.

Maybe you could ask them to take a pic of it with their phone to show everyone on here what it looks like, to help all the others who have the same problem but whose dealer is less capable.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Yes - Fiat are definately trying to make it difficult - probably hoping that the customer will either -

1 - Prefer to spend 30 on decent aftermarket brake pads than lose a days wages to do the "inspection" and another days wages for the "fix".

2 - Accept the tired old "They all do that Sir"

3 - Accept the "We took the brakes apart and cleaned them"

4 - Just get fed up trying !!

I explained the whole thing on the phone including the Fiat acknowledged fix. They insisted on me coming in to have them inspected BEFORE they could order the part.

I went in this morning. Noise not happening. Gave them a very assertive talking to about not wanting any fobbing off, any "brake cleaning" etc and ONLY wanting the official Fiat "KIT" installed.

Guess what - 1 hour later - they admitted they heard no noise but Fiat HQ agreed to send out the kit anyway.

Why could this not have been done on the phone ? Easy - waste my time hoping I would give up or be unable to take time off work.

So, part ordered and booked in next Fri for fitting. I will not be leaving the premises without the part being itemised on the invoice !!!

We WILL get a part number to publish here

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

In case it helps here's the work sheet for my 1st year service. It's a bit vague and no part numbers mentioned but it might help someone. It's due for the fix on 2nd Feb so I'll see if I get a more detailed work sheet then unless someone gets there first.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

My car is still in with the dealer, only had it a week for a faulty alternator and squeaky brakes.......maybe Monday will bring news......assuming they ordered a damper kit for both sides!
