I've never had any noise when reversing, but at 42k miles, and nearly 4 years old, the rear brakes on my Cross have started squealing with a vengeance! They are quiet for the first 10 minutes of a journey, after which the banshee wailing and screetching begins, until journey's end. Running with the handbrake on to clean the surface of the pads and discs makes no difference (apart from stopping the wretched noise temporarily while the handbrake is engaged).

Time to get the spanners and copper grease out, methinks! And I was looking forward to a nice, quiet weekend attacking the undergrowth in my garden.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

It's very odd - this brake sqeal seems to be fairly common but I've never experienced it, either on my 13-plate 4x4 TA or its 100HP predecessor. I'm fortunate that my car spends most of its time in a garage with the handbrake off and I suspect this makes a difference.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Mine started squealing a week or so ago, discovered that one of the dust protectors had completely detached itself, ripped it out, problem solved

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Might be too late to be of help. Mine was rear brakes not releasing, you could feel intense heat from the squeaky one after driving. Was sorted with disc and pad change, although rear discs are not an easy job on the 4x4 I believe

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Some pads have a thin shim bonded the the metal backing plate. Its not unheard of for these to part company with the pad. There are two options. Stick them back, or take them off and discard them. If the latter remember the pads will need renewing a little earlier as removal reduced the thickness by about 1mm. Its annoying but not restricted to Fiat brakes. Another possible fix is to remove the pads and chamfer the edges with a file this will also help reduce squeal. Remove any lip from the disc with a file or grinder while the pads are being checked. Ensure the Fiat 'mod' is fitted to the brakes too. This will be an FOC job at your dealer. With thorough cleaning and correct reassembly this lot should see you sorted.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Do you reckon they'll do that mod FOC for a car that's now out of warranty?

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

@gar074 my Fiat dealer that was suggested the modification only relates to certain ages of car, paying for the modified parts to stop the noise 200 all in. I had my brakes cleaned out with a soft brush and calipers lubed (or whatever it was) for about 50.

Makes one wonder why the ** Fiat don't fit these dampers to all new ones now they know about the issue????????

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

I stripped mine down a few months ago, cleaned them thoroughly, filed the edges off the discs, chamfered the edge off the pads, copper-greased the backs, and, less than 3k miles later, they've just started squealing to high heaven again. Seriously p*ssed off!

Lightbulb Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'm an English bloke living in The French Alps. I've got a 'Sweet Candy Beige' 2017 Panda Cross TwinAir.

I bought the car in May 2019. The dealer told me that the brakes had just been done and the squeal would soon disappear. 3000km later it has got worse. So I did some research. I believe in France the warranty is just 2 years so I plan to do the work myself.
  • This video alerted me to the design fault:
  • I asked the guy for the part number, it is 52025558
  • This is now discontinued. It is replaced by 2 numbers 52077564 for the damper and 77365755 the screw
So to do both rear calipers you need to order:
2 x 52077564
and
2 x 77365755

You can order the parts here:
https://www.online-teile.com/fiat-er...64_Damper.html
https://www.online-teile.com/fiat-er...755_Screw.html

I've only just ordered the parts, so I'll post some photos etc.later.
The parts seem expensive for what they are, but if it fixes the problem I'll be happy.

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Thanks for this. After a relatively noise-free summer, mine has recently started squealing like a stuck pig again. Never heard a peep from it in reverse (which is what the video refers to), but on the move, especially at speed, it's horrendous at times, esp. when the brakes have warmed up. Very irritating. And those parts are stupidly expensive.

That video, though. Zzzzzzzzzzz...

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

@gar074 - how worn are your rear brakes? The pads have a metal 'tag' on them that, once the pads have worn close to their limit, is designed to make contact with the disc to make a really annoying squeal, to alert you to the need to replace them.

If you look at the parts in this photo, (click to zoom in) you can see the metal tag at the bottom left corner of the left pad in the photo https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/pagid...-pad-101581108

Re: 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Not that worn! I've had them out several times now, so I know their condition intimately.

OK - it's all fixed. I had to buy the parts because my car is out of warranty, but it honestly feels like a different car now. The squeal has 100% gone:
