Hi all. Im new on here and wonder if anyone can help with an odd noise i am getting on my diesel Panda. Its a new 15 plate, with 2000 miles on the clock. hard to explain this but when im driving, and maybe doing about 2-3 thousand revs, sitting in 3rd for example, the high end sounding diesel noise you get, is that the fuel going through the injectors? I dont mean the low rumble, sometimes sounds very loud as if pressure has changed or something for a few seconds, and then goes back to the normal sound again. Anybody any ideas? I know nothing about diesels, is this normal?

Are you noticing anything preformance wise? My guess would be that it is the turbo you are hearing..

The MJ engine note changes to a quite 'rattly/coarse' sound somewhere between 1800 and 2500rpm (depends on engine load). But also, this change in note generally coincides with the 'change up' light coming on. If you change gear as soon as you hear that change in sound (or before, once you've got used to when it makes it) you will see a huge improvement in mpg. The diesel works best between 1500rpm (the point where maximum torque occurs) and 2000rpm. Rev any more than that wastes fuel but doesn't really get you going any faster - change up and you will sense more 'oomph' from the torque in the higher gear with lower revs. (Its not the turbo itself, but may be when the waste gate opens to reduce turbo pressure)

Odd engine noises apart, how are you getting on with it? diesel 4x4s seem to be quite rare.

re the noise. most modern small diesels seem to have a slight rough/noisy patch higher up the rev range. I think they overfuel slightly to give poke for overtaking.
