Twinair near stalling at idle

Hi All,

The OH told me yesterday the Panda Trekking TA stalled whilst going out of the drive, (The drive being a downward slope so you don't used the engine to reverse.)

I've had a look at it today, Temp 3.5oC, Start the car up, it idles at the normal revs and then a couple of seconds later it drops the revs to near stalling point and recovers after a few seconds.

(I'm guessing this what happened yesterday but didn't recover)
Restarted the car a few times after this and I couldn't replicate.

Nothing was running in the car (Lights / Heated seats / Climate Control etc)

Anyone had this before in the TA?
It's done 3300 Mile now and first time we have noticed this problem.

Only change it's had is we used 95 RON petrol on the weekend instead of the V+ Power Shell stuff (I like the lego ) - but TBH it shouldn't be that.

Will report if it gets worse, expected temperature is -4 tomorrow so that will be a good test.

There were problems with the coils on the TA motor. Stalling being one symptom. Get the car plugged in at your dealer.

Re: Twinair near stalling at idle

Forget the petrol thing - unless you're determined about the Lego, there's nothing to be gained by going for a higher octane.

I haven't experienced anything like this stalling but I think the TA engine just feels a bit off key when it's cold and the weather's also freezing.

Re: Twinair near stalling at idle

I've had the same problem. The FIAT garage updated the engine management software and it appears to have worked - or at least I've not had the problem since. It really is very annoying that a new car should even experience such issues.

Best of luck

Re: Twinair near stalling at idle

Well the Panda was built new in Aug 2014, How old was yours 4X4Panda?

I've put a video up of the 2nd day of me testing the car.

A couple of starts and you can see the idle is rock solid the 3rd time.

I'll keep an eye on it to see if it improves, gets better.
If not off to the dealer we go.
Cheers All!,

Hi,
shouldn't be coil packs,
that was an EARLY issue,
(my 2012 punto was apparently AFTER the fix)

as the car is relatively new,
I would hope the dealer can sort it easily,

my only time I get such is if I confuse the clutch switch .., and then at crawls along at @500 rpm

Re: Twinair near stalling at idle

Just another question,

Should the Twin Air make that high pitched sound when it first starts from cold?

It's at the start of my video - 17 seconds in?

always does it in 5oC or less temperature.

Cheers,

Cheers,
I've never heard that on mine - and it's been started often enough at sub-5 degrees - only heard it the first time. Does your car have climate control?

Re: Twinair near stalling at idle

Yup it has Climate Control.

That whining noise can be heard usually longer the colder / longer it has been left.

about 5 seconds usually of it.

Is the noise coming from the climate control?

Re: Twinair near stalling at idle

No the climate control is usually off at start-up, sometimes set to Auto.
On auto it's off until the engines warm enough to start up.

My Parents 2012 500 TwinAir squeals as it starts, but its only as it starts, not once its running. It's done it from a few months old, does it all the time in any weather (worse in cold temps) but nothing's ever come of it.

Dealer looked at it, but of course couldn't find anything wrong! We've just left it to its own devices.

Same here with my 500

Re: Twinair near stalling at idle

Dealer now has the car... Said they want to leave it overnight to replicate the issue so it's going to be gone till Monday.

I will let you know what happens.

Re: Twinair near stalling at idle

Dealer called,

Can't find anything wrong. Says its low on revs at the start but what's expected from a new TwinAir.

Should get better when it loosens up.

It's on the latest updates from Fiat and also no error codes have been logged.

Oh well, its' coming back tonight
