Technical Noisy brakes on the 4x4

Thanks for the update. I really need to get my backside into gear and have a word with my dealer about it. It actually hasn't been quite as bad recently but it still does it. Also my occasional exhaust/heat shield rattle from the rear has occurred a few times recently which I want to get sorted before I get a tow bar fitted.

This was a perennial topic on 100HPs on the Mk 3 Panda section. I've never suffered from it on the 100HP or the 4x4 and came to the conclusion that it's because I rarely use the handbrake as the car is parked in a garage with the handbrake off most of the time.

Are you sure the rattle is exhaust-related? - when cleaning the wheels yesterday I noticed that the crap shield on the rear discs was prone to rattling.

My abarth 500 had this at around 30000 and needed new pads to sort it but it has been doing this since 1 or 2 thousand miles. The vibration is generally only when I speed up and it doesn't seem to be from the wheels. I will have a look though, thanks for the suggestion.

My car is going in for 'assessment' tomorrow and I also have a case open with FIAT about is as ' brakes aren't covered by the warranty'.

Just noticed mine doing it today, although dont go in reverse very often and goes down muddy lanes every day! Only 1300 miles(n)

Mine has been doing it since nearly new so I don't think you'll find yours gets better. My abarth never did this until 30000 doing it at 1000 is rather poor.

Result of my visit was a bill for £72 for the brakes to be stripped and cleaned. I wouldn't mind if it hadn't been doing this from new and still only had 5500 miles on the clock.

I will speak to Fiat again tomorrow. Don't blame the dealer, Fiat should be saying it shouldn't be doing this and going out of their way to sort it.

I'm also not convinced it has sorted it as on Saturday afternoon I sent shopping to the supermarket and I'm sure it did it again as I reversed out of my parking space.

Will update if I get any further.

For obvious reasons there appears to be quite hefty brakes on the 4x4. I would guess that on a vehicle used solely on the road, the rears don't do a huge amount. Perhaps occasional heavy braking might stop them sticking. Just a thought.

Hi Shaston. That's what I thought hence not really making a big thing about it but I've done plenty heavy braking as I go over a big steep hill every day and it makes no difference. My abarth had good brake and didn't have this issue when it was new. It is more a case or the usual rear fiat disc issues in 500/panda models I think.

The rear brakes on my old Rover 220SD rusted so badly that I had to replace
discs and pads (though those on my recent Alfa Mito gave no trouble...)

I was relieved to find the Panda Trekking retains drums at the rear- these
seem quite adequate, and will probably be more reliable :)

I hope there's a permanent cure for the reverse brake howl (and at
Fiat's expense :p )

Ive just had my brakes looked at by the dealer :bang:. They will not replace the pads, they said "the brakes just make a noise, thats the way they are". Sorry he was just talking out of his arse:mad:, I have not read in the spec that the brakes will squeal there arse off. Anyway a call to fiat might be in order then after that I might fit some quality pads . I'll keep you posted.

Fiat authorised my dealer to replace rear discs and pads saying that they were distorted and a faulty batch......

Thanks for confirming way they did that Triumph7. I have already said to Fiat I'm aware of another 4x4 owner who has this issue and needed new pads and discs.

Just to let you know I've left my car back with the dealer this week while in working away and they are going to fit new pads and or discs to see if that sorts it. Still having the 'discussion' this fiat who pays (I have so far).

On a more positive note when I was in last time and they cleaned the brakes they did two software updates as I mentioned the 'ELD unavailable' messages randomly at start up. I've not had this happen again since the updates so hopefully that's one thing fixed.

I also feel the gear change indications and lower rev e.g 1500-2200 range has felt better since. Probably imagining it but it all.

So far so good. Brakes still quiet when reversing following replacement of discs & pads.

Another (minor) problem now in the form of a very annoying rattle apparently from inside the nearside rear door..... Hmmmm
