Here are few pics of the new 4x4 TA - 350 miles on the clock when I bought it from Vospers in Exeter (my old 100HP should be for sale there shortly). Notice that there's still some Polish content - see last pic.

It has the lighter of the interior options, which contrasts with the dark grey and black of the 100HP. Feels very high; I reckon the driver's eye is about 4 inches higher from the road than in the 100HP, so view seems very commanding.

Took a tootle into Honiton - best ice cream for miles - soft and Italian style - Honiton Dairy - pity the ice creamio isn't a bit more cheerful.

Initial impressions.

Like the colour - Tuscan Green - became my favourite when I had another test drive last week - I notice that almost all the road tests and videos have 4x4s in this colour so Fiat may agree.

Gruff little engine is very different from the 100HP but in a very pleasing way. Mid-range pick up is quite useful; lots more miles to bed it in so it should be lively enough after that. Still think second is a bit high for starting off, prefer first unless there's a down slope or not quite come to a halt. Pulls well from 2000 revs to 5500; soft rev limiter at 6000.

Stop and Start will have its uses but I'm sure it will sometimes be switched off.

Gearbox is fine but there's a big gap between second and third.

Brakes are much more servoed than the 100HP but very smooth and will be fine when I'm used to them. Steering's too light.

Blue etc seems a bit fussy (it is Microsoft after all) - I hadn't expected the level of voice recognition but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'll try pairing things and iPods/iPads in the next few days.

Not noticeably bigger than the 100HP in the garage, though mirrors are much bigger - and much better, suit the car more than they would the 100HP. BUT - if it's the second car in the garage the aerial fouls the door as it's shut - have to get a short aerial.

More reflections as I get used to it.

Should have added thanks for the recent mention of a toolkit that sits inside the spare wheel - I convinced the salesman that this is the way things should be and they took the velcro-attached bag away and produced the other kit - and remembered that I needed the little plastic funnel if I ever fill it from a can.

Also - after recent discussion - the parcel shelf has strings attached.

Hi, glad you like the car. I have the other special 4x4 colour, Sicilian orange and I love it (thankfully, as it was a brave choice).
I am also in conversation with my dealer about the tool kit. I wonder if you could email me the pic of the spare wheel with tool kit insert so I can prove to him that it does exist?
Many thanks - the email address is [email protected]
Kind regards.

I've just looked through the mountain of manuals that came with my 4x4 and the 4x4 supplement is for the diesel - did you get a 4x4 TA supplement with yours? Anybody?

No. Only multijet 4x4 supplement.

The reason for all the green test cars was that was the colour of all the uk launch models. Green multijet. White TwinAir.

Don't think the last bit's correct - I was thinking of Italian tests as well as UK - and the LHD test TAs seem to be green; also the Autocar test is of a green TA.

Guys - I'm confused about this manual.

The thin 4x4 supplement that came with my TA, covers 6 variants:

MJ - 4 seat, 5 seat and 2 seat (VAN)
TA - 4 seat, 5 seat and 2 seat (VAN)

What am I missing here???

When I looked through the stack of paper that came with my TA, the 4x4 supplement only covers the MJ version, but it appears that there's either a TA-only version, or a version that covers all the 4x4 combinations. Trying to download a manual from the Fiat web site either stalls and does nothing or crashes my browser.

A few more impressions.

Surprisingly good on main roads. Coming from Exeter to Okehampton on the (dualled) A30, the TA seems happy to cruise at 3500-4000 revs - 80-90 mph in sixth - and remember it's done less than 500 miles. At the lower speed in particular there's still enough acceleration for you to feel you could accelerate out of a developing traffic situation instead of the only option being to brake and/or steer, which is how the 1.2 is. Quite severe main road hills are taken in its stride.

Not sure if it's turbo lag or a rather binary accelerator but there's a definite point where the engine starts to work. Unlike many engines, when you feel it's beginning to struggle at low revs - and this is a regime where its twin cylinders make themselves felt with quite a lot of vibration - where you might either change down or ease off on the throttle - opening the TA throttle enables it to pick up quite smoothly.

Stop/start - like it. Traffic jams are quite difficult to come by in this part of Devon but I'm a convert. My only reservation is when the traffic moves forward a few feet very frequently - unless you want to exasperate the car behind by not closing up each time, the engine has just switched itself off when it kicks in again as you declutch to engage a gear. As a result, I feel I've ridden the clutch several times just to stop the engine from stopping - could be a familiarity thing.

Haven't tried Eco - probably won't.

The ride is really a revelation, especially for a Fiat, as the damping is well judged - where the 100HP (in particular) made you wince, the 4x4 TA just lopes along. Roll is well controlled despite the height - and feeling of height.

The steering is too light.

Can't see the front at all when driving.

Filled it up for the first time today - more on this touchy subject later but as long as it matches the 100HP's overall 39 or so mpg I'll be quite happy.

Can you give me the part number for this handbook, please? I e-mailed Fiat and they replied to download from the web site - that's now working OK but doesn't include any 4x4 supplement - diesel or TA. I rang Fiat Customer Service - they said contact your dealer - I said are you sure there's a manual - they said don't really know, but there must be. Great.

I much like your registration (y)

Are you aware of the former French hovercraft type N500:

[ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N500_Naviplane[/ame]

I recall once seeing it parked at Boulogne after crossing the
Channel in one of the rough but reliable British hovercraft :D

Never got a chance to try the N500 as it very rarely worked
