Technical Space saver wheel...

Just to confirm a 135 space saver spare from an 2004 punto does fit the panda!

Re: Space saver wheel, 06 multijet.

Hi.
I've had my panda for 10yrs now, and following a recent puncture, and the frustration of using a space saver (better than a spray can though) I decided to finally get round to buying a proper spare. I tried all the local scrappies (again) with no luck, so bit the bullet and ordered a new one. Local fiat gge quoted £110 (+vat, I think) + extra for the tyre........
After much searching about on the internet, I ordered one from Tyreleader.co.uk together with a Toyo NanoEnergy3 155/80 r13 tyre.
They cost £23.77, and £28.29 respectively, including VAT. so £52.06 in total.(though I did buy a lawnmower tyre at the same time to eliminate £5 delivery)

I soon discovered that they are all dispatched separately, from Germany! They took 4 days, 6 days and 7+??? days (lawn tyre not here yet) to arrive.
I was having my MOT done today, so picked up a new valve from the garage (I believe they only cost 12p or so to them).

I actually have an old ex garage tyre fitting jig, but couldn't be bothered to move the compressor to it, and was amazed to discover how easy it was to fit the tyre with only my (smallish!) bare hands, and some fairy liquid.
It even seated for pumping up instantly.

Having done all this, I decided to compare my spacesaver with the new one......There was only 725g extra weight! That's ridiculous!

I reckon, that since my car weighs 935Kg that the most fuel that I could ever save, would be er er ....
I've done 120k miles, at 60mpg =2000galls of diesel divided by 935/0.725 = 1.55galls x 4.55 = 7 litres at say £1.10/lt means that I've saved an absolute maximum of £7.70 in fuel.
Bearing in mind that that space saving tyre will never be worn out, in the lifetime of the car, and that one mounted on a full sized wheel undoubtedly would be, and that this 'wasted' tyre will have used more than 7 litres of oil to manufacture, could someone from Fiat please tell me why it was such a good idea to inconvenience me in this way? Its bad for both me, and the environment.

I've just bought 2016 Panda Trekking 95 with 15" alloys - according to handbook needs a 15" spare wheel. Spoke with supplying Fiat dealer - said they don't do a space-saver but could supply spare wheel - £110 + VAT + tyre.
Saw one on ebay anyone used it?
Any positive suggestions on where to get space-saver spare? - goo kit rubbish

Read back through this thread and you'll find the answers :)
In summary, the Trekking (and 4x4 and Cross) need a 15" spare (to clear the larger front disk brakes) fitted with 135/80 spacesaver tyre (full size wheel and tyre wont fit in the boot). You also need a different jack for the Trekking/4x4/Cross owing to their higher initial ground clearance (the Fiat one is marked Qubo/Panda 4x4), although alternatives from Screwfix etc available. Several dealers have apparently supplied spares and jacks from 'lesser' Pandas that have proved not to work with the 4x4.

Of course, its not just Fiat. Nearly every make and model of new cars these days comes with (if you are lucky) a space saver spare, or (more likely) a fix and go kit. Somewhere, someone must have worked out that there's a good reason for this (probably cost).

Hi Herts Hillhopper
Yes, have read thru' thread and none indicated where you can get the 15" space-saver. Did note that you have the 135x80 R15 - from where?
Manaual also says 125x80 R15 is specified but as rims all identical can't see why 135 or 125.

Sorry, missed that you were asking where they came from...
Mine (and others) from Ebay - its an ex Fiat Punto spare wheel , from about 2004. Cost me £25 or so. And, small typo on my part - I have a 125/80 tyre on it.
Many car breakers now use Ebay as a shop so there should be plenty listed. Key thing is, as well as 15" diameter, the 35mm offset (marked as ET35 on the wheel)
The tyre on mine is dated 2004, so really should be replaced. Although it looks fine, 12 years is a long time ago and the rubber or internal structure may have deteriorated. That said, no sign of any perishing etc - one advantage of the spare being 'protected' in the boot. Fiat Multiplas also had a 15" spacesaver, but slung under the car and generally the spare wheels from them are very rusty and the tyres likely to be in poor health.
Hope this helps... Pete

Suggest you buy the tools with the spare. Not sure the spray can comes with a jack. At the very least you get the new polystyrene insert to keep them in place.

And again note 'standard' Panda jack doesn't lift 'Trekking' high enough.
I bought jack and wheel brace from Screwfix:
Jack: £17.99 http://www.screwfix.com/p/hilka-pro-craft-1-5-tonne-scissor-jack/97595
Wheel brace: £7.99 http://www.screwfix.com/p/hilka-pro-craft-1-5-tonne-scissor-jack/97595
The higher-lift jack needed with the Trekking won't sit in the plastic 'tools' tray - which is why, Trekkings/4x4s and Crosses supplied with the optional spare wheel all have the jack and toolkit lying in a bag in the boot.
