OK so yesterday i was going home at about 2 in the morning and i stepped on the gas at one moment (i have to admit i was angry at something nad stepped on the gas pedal really hard) and the next thing i know my gas pedal is stuck!!! The car revs at around 6500 rpm and stay there, luckily the brakes override the gas pedal so i pulled over and turned of the car. The problem is that when you look at the gass pedal and when it is pressed all the way there is a metal screw sticking out of the floor. And when you press the gas pedal the pedal goes over the screw and the screw sticks in the pedal and the pedal cant get up again. There should be a cover. I have this picture only , ill try to take one again. Your thoughts?

It would be interesting to see the setup on RHD cars.

Also, wouldn't it have been easier to drop the clutch, then use the brakes to come to a halt.

well i did exactly that, used the clutch to move the gear to neutral, used the brakes to go to a complete stop and turned of the car because it was reving really hard and i was afraid it would damage the engine (only 1500 km on the dial)

What about declutching and putting your toe under the pedal and pulling it back?

I had a Citroen Dyane with a sticky throttle pedal once and I had to do that once or twice, before I oiled the hinge. Only the Dyane had a centrifugal clutch so it was impossible to stall it - oh, the days... :)

I couldn`t do that, i had to pull it with my hand with much force. Yeah and the title should be safety...

So you pressed the pedal so hard that it bent the arm as it slipped round the stop.

Anyway, it looks like the base of the pedal isn't flat, but rather pointed, and this permitted it pedal to twist? I think perhaps that Fiat should redesign the pedal base so that it has a flat or even cupped base and so sits securely on the pedal stop.

I don't think I've pushed the pedal of any car to the floor more than a few times, and then not aggressively, but yes, perhaps, when trying to get past a car???

I'll take a look at this when I'm in the dealer next.

This is the sort of problem that car manufacturers spent a lot of time to design out of their products.
It's basically impossible to press that hard on the foot brake that the lever bends, and bear in mind that brake levers are designed to fail in a frontal crash when the floor intrudes into the passenger compartment.
Similarly there is no way that any over-pressing of the throttle should cause the symptoms that you describe.
Look what the throttle problem did to Toyota, FIAT do appear to have messed up.

There is normally a big round flat plastic disk which should sit on top of the screw. You can see the recess for it in the carpet. Not sure where yours has gone, but have it refitted and you should be fine.

Yes I agree Jon. Fiat have used those plastic caps for years (mk1 Punto definitely has them).

The picture shows it was there as I can see the imprint in the carpet.

They are designed to be taken off, but tend not to fit back as securely once removed - has someone messed around with the carpeting in the footwell?

well the car was cleaned at a carwash so i suppose the guys who cleaned it forgot to put it/lost the part
