Have there been any leaks as to the engine for the next 4x4? We have a Climbing, and would desperately love the new one to come with the twinair lump, or at a push, the 1.4.

I think the 1.2 has 5hp more now, but come on Fiat, give the worlds cheekiest 4x4 a bit of pep!

PLEASE FIAT, IF YOU MAKE A TWINAIR 4X4 I WILL ORDER ONE TOMORROW! :D

It's a very versitile 4x4, its not designed to have a 'bit of pep'. The 1.2 engine is more than adiquate for the setup tbh.

No hints as to the engine in the mk4 4x4 yet though.

This article seems to think all three engines from the standard range will be offered, but i dunno how accurate eurocarblog usually are. Think i've seen 6 speed TwinAir 85 & the 1.3 Multijet mentioned elsewhere as the two likely engines, but can't find the article after having a quick look.

Would imagine the low-down torque of the TwinAir would lend itself well to the 4x4, though. The 1.2 on its own would be abit of a wasted opportunity. Maybe good as a budget 4x4, but then offer the more powerful engines too.

Yeah, isn't the 1.2 road tax exempt in the normal panda/500? Didn't they do an updated version, Or am I imagining it?

Imagining it, it's cheaper on the 1.2 2wd but not free. I still can't believe the 1.2 4x4 is the same as my 1.4 16v Stilo a year on the tax band! I only found out about 2 weeks ago.

Yeah, the 1.2 in its various guises does differ in terms of emissions.

The 1.2 8v in the 500 emits 113 g/km CO2, whereas in the new Panda it emits 120 g/km CO2. Both fall within the £30 tax bracket in the UK.

However the 1.2 8v in the new Punto emits 123 g/km CO2, meaning that it is the next tax bracket (£90 per year?).

I would imagine Fiat would want any TwinAir engine to be tax exempt, but it might well be hard with the proposed 105hp version. We'll see...

It's simple, really. Both Diesel and 1.2 petrol-powered versions of the mk. 3 Panda are heavier (extra transmission components and strengthened bodies) and geared lower. As a result the engines work harder to make the same progress as relevant FWD variants and use more fuel, emit more CO2.
I cannot imagine a 4x4 version of the latest Panda qualifying for zero road tax.

In the Netherlands the CO2 border is < 111 g/Km (Petrol), and < 96 g/Km (Diesel).
This will change on 1 july 2012 to < 103 g/Km for petrol and < 92 g/Km Diesel.
It will change again in 2013 to < 96 g/Km for petrol and < 89 g/Km for diesel.
In 2014 it will change again to < 89 g/Km for petrol and < 86 g/Km for diesel.
The last change will be in 2015 and petrol and diesel will be the same at 83 g/Km.

There for the Panda 105 hp version need to be lower then 103 g/Km to make sense now.
It will be a lot more difficult in the future.

And on the subject of improvements, I wonder if we can finally wave goodbye to "consumable" dampers? Our 4x4 managed an average of nearly one per year until we sourced a non-OEM make.
